Don’t forget when you get some plans, for the safety of your own baby follow the appropriate safety guidelines regarding limb and finger entrapment measurements

The bars should be spaced between 50 and 85mm apart.

The cot should have a minimum depth of 600mm from the top of the mattress to the top of the cot.

The gap between the mattress and the cot on all sides should be under 2.5cm.

Make sure that only two legs have castors, or at least two out of the four caster legs have brakes.

Check that locking devices are easy to use for an adult but very difficult for a child.

Do some research yourself to double check as it’s a very important safety issue. Good luck with your project.

    Gudday,

Will get back to you in couple of days with some photos etc. FIRST thing to buy is a mattress. They come in different sizes and thicknesses therefore to meet the 'standards' of gaps height from top of matress etc. you need to work from the dimensions of your matress.

I made one for ours and then built another for the sister and hers.

From the matress you can calculate length of sides, depth of sides etc.

    Will be in touch.

    Hi,

I am looking for plans myself and found these:

    http://plansnow.com/crib.html

Looks quite good but cannot find a local supplier for the required hardware.

If you get the plans and hardware please let me know where from.

    PD
I couldn't find a plan I liked so made my cot based on the cots I liked.

After getting requests for plans I made up a basic set of plans.
    See attachments.
You are welcome to them if they suit what you are after.

I agree with the other comments posted -particularly about the matress size.

for the drop side mechanisms you can get two types. There are a few suppliers in Australia (Carbatec WA, www.clicksystems.com.au) of the one type (rod & latch) or you could get the hidden hardware from the US. I bought mine from www.productsamerica.com/page52.html (PH-60) and it was about US$40

with a baby on the way, I spent the weekend looking at baby stuff, including cots. I concluded that I will build a change table, but leave the cots for the pros. I'd never forgive myself if something happened (even if it would have happened anyway on a purchased cot). I think there is a much lower chance of anything happening on a change table as the baby will be supervised all the time.

One thing I was told, but not sure if it is true, is that the rod and latch type of mechanisms do not meet Australian standards. As I said, I'm not sure if it is true, but the store I went to did not have any cots with that mechanism. They all used a concealed mechanism where you lift the rail and then bush the bottom of it with your leg to drop the side.

    Well done PD.

    My cot is Tassie blackwood.
It is good to work , although fiddleback is inclined to tear out. Care, sharp tools and sanding are needed.

I used Livos Kunos oil for the finish.
Wipe it on and polish it off.
It is easy to use, no problems with runs or dust and gives a silky smoothe low gloss finish.
It is some natural/organic mix that is safe for kids.
It smells like oranges when you open the tin.

You should be able to find it for sale nearby.

Slavo: I wish I knew of these suppliers when I was making my cot.

    Default My Cot

Sorry I took a while to get back to you. Number three came early on 15 August and has kept us busy since. Settlement on the new house is monday so a busy time moving coming up.

I took some photos of my cot made from brush box. Will try to up load them for all to see. Finish is Organoil hard burnishing oil (a cold pressed not petroleum extracted tung oil good for kitchen cutting boards etc.)

Lets see if these images load.

    Cheers
