So i want to make a four poster bed ... ... ...
Hi all, noob here.
Basically, i want to make a four poster bed out of wood. I will be getting a king size bed, ensemble matress, that has two draws in the base of the bed.
I wish to build a structure around this, to give the appearance of a four poster bed.
Went down the recycled timber yard, and they have some nice hardwood, which i intend to rout the edges, nothing too fancy, but not too boring either.
Thinking about using some nice solid 90*90 posts, some thick boards for the rails at calf height, and some thinner hardwood running along the top
What sort of brackets and joinery should i be getting? where from?
Also, what sort of finish should i use on hardwood? I want something dark, am thinking about just staining and varnishing
All help and any comments much appreciated

Search pencil post bed. There are plans here but they will set you back $20 plus postage. Probably some free plans if you google hard enuff.
BTW welcome to the forums____________________________________________

There was a guy on here made his own bed a few months back with little tools or experience. I'll try and find the link.

Found it, but its a queen size, and not a four poster. Good description of how he made it though.

Bed Brackets
I have read on this forum in the past about maxilock bed brackets. While they are good...they are not great. Especially with your four post bed, you need a high quality durable bracket that will last.
There is a company in WA that will post via to you bed brackets called timbecon, you can buy over the phone or online.
the best brackets i found are made by a company in Melbourne, but they only sell direct to bedroom furniture manufacturers, but those brackets cant be beat.
They are on my bed, and not a squeak, or movement from the side rail

Bed brackets on page 2.71 to 2.74
You can get ones like the Timbecon ones from Bunnings for about 8 bucks

G'day Eva and welcome to the ratbags hideout.
If Eva is a female why should ONE MAN hold your bed?

Measured Shop Drawings for American Furniture
I built one based on the plans for a pencil post bed in this book. You may be able to get it through your library or on Amazon.
Here is a picture on the authors website. I think ours cost less than US$4,700 from memory, although perhaps the silky oak I used has had a price rise since then.
Regards,
James
