Default Posting photos on the forums

Re posting up photos on the forums, what are the options apart from cutting pics down to postage stamp size or using photobucket (a P in the A when loading up large numbers of photos)?

Got a few pics of the classical guitar Im building Id like to put up.

    Any help much appreciated

You should be able to resize the pictures to about 1/2 screen size (640x 480 pixels is good) and play with the compression settings when you save them. High compression settings makes them go 'fuzzy' while low compression leaves them bigger than necessary. Pictures that are 50-70k size are good for onscreen viewing and under the forum size limits.

Photoshop is the easiest, but PaintShopPro will also do, just "save to web"" and/or marginalise background.

I use a program called bitmapshrinker to do mine, take them down to 25% and they come out a nice size. But it depends on the resolution of your camera, mine come out around 568 x 426 and about 40k in file size.

    Default Image Hosting

In my opinion, an image hosting service is the way to go. It provides high resolution pics and doesn't take up space on the Ubeaut site.

Simply take your picture, upload to the hosting site of your choice (I use Image Shack http://imageshack.us/ ) and create a link to the hosted picture.

The image below is hosted by Image Shack.

On this issue, is there a dedicated jpeg compresser or a graphics program that gives an indication of the final file size, eg you can dial in the desired file size and the program saves it at whatever quality setting to achieve that?

At the moment I use a couple of programs, Irfanview is one, to crop & resize then save the image, varying the quality percentage by trial & error until I get the right file size. Usually takes a couple of saves/ checks to get it right.

    Just wondering .........cheers..............Sean

I use Paintshop pro, and while it doesn't have a set it and forget it file sizing doohickey, when you 'save as', click options, then optimizer and adjust the compression value there. It tells you what the compressed file size will be, and I usually dial it down to just under 100K, whatever that ends up being.

I would suspect that most of the decent graphics programs have a similar feature, but I only know PSP.

Just as Termite says, I think "JPEG Compress" is the best program around and it is free. I have Photoshop and two Canon Programs one that came with my Scanner and one that came with my camera but JPEG Compress is by far the easiest to use and it allows you to keep excellent resolution and post the largest pictures possible.

I just load the photo into it and just move the slider until it is just under the 100 k.

The attached photo was put up here yesterday and the original was 850k reduced down to about 96k and when the thumbnail first opens you should be able to click on it again and will get larger again.

It might also be worth setting the size (in pixels) of the saved image. The photo of the step drill is 98660 bytes (ok as far as the forum is concerned) but its size in pixels (before windows resizes it) is 1600x1200. I'm not sure how much effect changing the size in pixels will have on the final file size but maybe you could experiment a bit and let us know?

In regards to pixel size, unless there is a lot of fine detail I have found that 800x600 gives me a good size picture. With jpegcompress I alter the larger of the dimensions to 800 pixels and let the program adjust the other dimension to maintain aspect ratio. Then save the piccy just under 100k and upload away!
Have a nice day - Cheers

I post a few pics here and I use this program I must admit its good and its easy

I just resize the image and then adjust the slider to bring the size of the file into the range I need, I then "save as" them to a jpeg compress file I set up so any pics I want to post are in that file in the correct file size.

    Cheers Ian
