Hi Durdge.
Like Weisey says whynot start making a few things for yourself first and as people who know you see what you can do they may ask you to do stuff for them. Generally things made to order sell for significantly more than off the shelf items. Word of mouth does travel pretty quick. The joinery shop I manage made a conference table for a company about a year and a half ago and since we have had orders for four or five more all of these were $7500+ contracts that would have been hard pressed to make four or five off the shelf. We do some nice heritage work and furniture in between there is a lot of pretty mundane stuff to pay the bills. Florists boxes and doorframes etc. I know you are not looking to make millions but I wouldn't get too depressed if you don't sell much just make sure you enjoy the making of it.
