Default Project Ideas for this Jarrah

When I collected a heap of timber from marginata last week it included two very worn massive door treads. They were 1200mm long and at least 320x65 in dimensions. To give an idea of how worn they were, the centre of one of the treads was around 15mm lower than the external ends. Anyway, Dave and Mike decided there were to many nails in them and they would not be worth keeping. I was about to lop them up to throw in the wood heater when I thought better of it and started searching for nails throughout them. I then ripped them down to remove the mortises that where in them from the door frame and spent an hour running them through the thicknesser to get them down to below the worn section. Spewing I did not take any before photos.

I have ended up with two 1200mm lengths of 220 x 50. I was thinking coffee table but together they are not really wide enough so that started me on thinking maybe I would throw it out there for ideas of what you would do with it. I don't want to cut them down any smaller and intend on keeping them in large slab form as they are and using them for a top for something. I have plenty of other timber for whatever else might be needed to complete the piece so here goes, give it your best shot. Who knows, maybe I will use your idea and post some pictures of what becomes of it.

If you have pictures of possible projects please post them, as they say a picture tells a thousand words.

    Cheers,
    Mike

    Burnsy,

I would have kept some of the 65 mm stuff for bowl turning!

Bowl turning have you seen my lathe it is strictly for tool handles.

My doors and frames are all aluminium so I will pass on the door treads idea thanks.

    Burnsy,

How about a rocker like this one? You would need a bit more jarrah in 38 mm thickness to complete the project. But the wood you have should suffice for the back legs, arms, and perhaps the back rails.

    Coffee table sounds interesting.
How about you laminate it with a contrasting timber down the middle, something light like tassie oak
my coffee table for example is about 550 wide. so you would end up with a strip down the middle about 110 wide in a contrasting timber

If that didn't appeal you could rip say 20ml off each piece of jarrah and then laminate to have 200 jarrah 20 t oak 20 jarrah 70 t oak 20 jarrah 20 t oak and 200 jarrah across the table top.

just an idea, would look something like this ( sorry about my colours etc)

Funny that you suggest that because this lump of Tassie Oak (or at least that is what I think it is) was picked up as is off the side of the raod yesterday by my father. LOML suggested using is as per this picture but I was not convinced and was worried about the different timbers moving at different rates and ripping the whole top apart? Do you think this would be a problem?

What timber and style for legs?

Burnsy, you could just send it to me, save you all that mess it would make.

Now why would I do that. After all, the reason I pickup all the timber from Dave and burn it is to keep it away from you lot over there in the first place

Burn it! Burn it! Burn it!

Isn't that why you're called Burnsy?

Rather cold this evening. I could come over and we'll roast marshmallows.

You missed that opportunity on Tuesday night when I piled up a tonne of massive tuart that was too hard to split and set it alight. Burnt for two days

Do you know where the stair treads came from?

It would be a shame to burn it after you wasted so much with the thicknesser.

    How about a hall table.
1200 by 400 are good dimensions.

Shape the edges and add 4 legs.
I'd suggest jarrah legs - shaped but not tapered.
    Simple and elegant.

We got them out from under a house in Parkerville but they weren't attached to a set of stairs and they had been there a long time.

    You are both bad

but given the amount of firewood Marginata is giving you I thought there would be enough of that ugly WA timber to make legs and rails etc
I'm not sure that 1 piece of another lighter timber gives enough panache, hence the suggestion I made earlier in that fairly basic drawing

BTW I think Tassie oak has similar properties to Jarrah (except maybe the silica)
