Queen bed project
Hi, I'm about to build a nice queen size bed with drawers underneath, from pine & MDF. Does anyone know where the cheapest place in perth to buy structural pine is?
I work in the building trade so I'm hoping to find some left over on job sites but I need about 22 lengths (1550 long) of 75x35 & 3 lengths (2050 long) of 90x35 structural pine for the base, head & foot boards.
The decorative pieces & legs I can get from bunnings unless I find a cheaper place. The drawers will be separate items on castors but built to match the bed, made from MDF with pine sub frame for strength.
I'm not sure if I'll lacquer it all or not. The furniture in my house is black & so my bed shall be which is 1 reason I chose pine (I don't want to ruin jarrah by painting it black). The other reasons are cost, easy to work with & lighter in weight. The design is solid so when all joined together will be heavy. I will try to scan the drawings & post here soon.
This is my 5th timber project. I've built 2x steel topped jarrah work benches for my shed, a 4' pine & MDF aquarium cabinet with 8x 240V GPO's & built-in RCD, a 2nd 4' open aquarium stand for a friend & a natural jarrah-slab coffee table with shelf (now ready for polyurethane coat)...............will post pics when I get chance.
I love working with timber. It was 1 of my favourite high school classes. I love making stronger, better furniture than you can buy for a fraction of the purchase price of the most equivalent item available. It's so satisfying every time you look at it & you know it will last.

I forgot about my spa frame & wine barrel sub woofer.............I guess they're wooden projects too.
Bed base is done, all 4 drawers are done. I just need to finish the head board & foot board & paint it.

Sweet. Bed finished. Sorry, poor quality pics, had dirt on camera lens
Finished in less than 2 weeks (about 20 man/hrs total) & total cost of $700.

Good to see. I intend to do much the same in the next month or so, was shopping for a new mattress just yesterday!
Having a brain-phart today so you can do the math:
2x8 perimeter and corner legs, 2x2 cleat all around inside that. 1x4 or 1x6 slats. Center lengthwise span of 2x4 beam with two short legs at 1/3's along the middle.
I'll stain the perimeter but just Varathane/light sand all else for sort of smooth.
Might run some sort of bead around the outside with the router, no firm plan yet.
The headboard is done = looks like a piece of fence except for a couple of recessed reading lights. It keeps the bed head 6" away from the wall which is very cold in the winter. The cold draft that "sheets" down that wall goes under the bed instead of flooding out over me and the pillows.
