    Default Question About Joinery

    Hi,

I am an amateur woodworker. I am a big fan of no nail/screw construction and use metal fasteners only when they are necessary. Lately, I have been reading about japanese woodworking with a great interest. Their joinery is indeed a beautiful art. However, that leaves me with a question. For practical reasons, is it necessary to such complex joinery? Can the strength of modern glue and simple joinery achieve the same strength and durability as with such advanced joinery? I am just trying to make a better use of my time, weighing the cost vs benefit of employing such joinery.

    Thanks.

Hi - I too have looked at Japanese Woodwork and have admired the beautiful joinery and style. For me - i think the Japanese enjoyed making a piece with as much artistic and technic as they could for the honor of the finished product. A piece of art! So I dont think it is needed for most of us to pursue - however if you have the time to practice then you could enjoy the benefits of style and presentation as such.

Bring the ideas that you like into the modern form and technic and try simple pieces 1st before your ambition wets your appetite too much

Thanks for the reply. I think you're right. I am probably going to take a few of their more practical joinery. The rest seems like an over-engineering to me.

It's not about the destination, it's about the journey I think. That's sounds rather poignant doesn't it ? Forget I ever said it !
