If you got a lathe Zed, you could turn pens.

    Fight that temptation Zed.
IanW and alastair are the devil.

I actually have a lathe. My brother gave it to me. I have it hidden in a corner. Fortunately it is a home made version that looks like it would take a lot of work to get it working reasonably.

I don't want to start another type of woodworking until I am half competent at what I am attempting. Plus I haven't bought all the tools I need for this one yet.
Turning would take up some valuable shed space and I would end up with another truck load of new toys.
How often do you need round things anyway?

I am really happy when I can get things square.

Besides, jigs are fun to make.

Is it a straight or curved taper?

If it's curved, you could rough it out on the bandsaw, then plane it to round as described by Echnidna in his early post. It's not too hard, and is another thing worth learning.
