Quick question about painting edge of plywood
I am using some 12mm ply and the edge will show in a couple of spots.
What can I finish it with to give a smooth appearance.
The pieces are already insitu so attaching smooth pieces of anything is not an option.
Hopefully a forumite can help out here.
Thanks
Frank

Wood filler, something like door and trim filler that goes hard if the piece won't be flexed. It can be painted over when dry.
Cheers

I have used Timbermate for a similar situation. When dry it sands very smooth.

Frank, my view is that what you do depends on two factors:
- Quality of plywood, and
- Whether you intend to paint the shelf or apply clear finish.
If it is good quality plywood, I would just sand the plywood and go to the finish coat.
If it is el cheapo plywood, I would use wood filler, sand smooth and then paint it.
If you are using a paint finish I would do the following.
- I prefer Killrust Epoxy Enamel because it gives a very tough finish,
- Stir paint and then paint edges of plywood, top, bottom and then the edges again. (This is because the edges are more absorbant.)
- Next day, sand lightly and repeat above step.
If you are using a paint finish I would do the following.
- I prefer hi gloss polyurethane because of its tough finish,
- Apply poly to edges, top, bottom and edges again, wait 10 minutes, then rub off with clean cloth (This forces poly into wood grain.)
- Next day, lightly sand and repeat process,
- Next day, dilute poly with equal quantity of turps, dip 400 grit sandpaper into mixture and wet sand entire surface in the same order. Surface must be damp all over, but not wet.
- If needed, repeat next day with 600 grit sandpaper.
This will give you a bullet-proof finish.
I do not apply clear finish over filler because I think it is always too obvious; others are better at it than me.

I don't have any plywood edges to paint Graeme, but I still want to commend you for giving of your time and posting such a detailed and no doubt helpful response to that question. Kudos to you sir!
