The last time I used neo magnets, I recessed them a hair, and filled in the gap with clear epoxy.

That way I don't have to worry about them chipping if I close the gap too quickly. And neo magnets chip fairly easily.

Thanks Rusl for the kind offer, but I'm going to miss out as I'm too caught up with Christmas capers and about to go away on hols.

I just bought a bunch of the 3mm x 2mm ones - they're surprisingly strong for their size.
It's recommended to use 2 magnets together at one side and a single magnet on the other, but I reckon they're too strong for that and two single magnets would work well, even with a slight gap as Grain Man suggested.

I've got a lot thru this mob Frenergy Magnets - Cheapest Magnets - Massive Range.
They also sell on ebay.
The 3mm round by 5mm long seem to work for me. I put 2 on each side of a box, two in base and two in lid. Its just right amount to hold closed and just easy enough to open when I need to.
The 3mm is also easy to drill and get them into a narrow edge.
