    Default Reclaimed Hardwood (from houses)

    Hi Guys,

I noticed that there is plenty of reclaimed hardwood beams etc available for sale on sites such as Gumtree and recyclers.

I know this is a broad question, typically what species would they be and is it worth the effort to resaw/dress it for us in basic furniture making when you dont want a recycled look.

    Interested in peoples views?

    Cheers
    Nick

Someone in the street was demolishing his house about 2 years ago. I offered the builders $$$ to carefully remove all the Tas Oak floorboards and hardwood beams (blackbutt, ironbark, blue gum??).
I costed me $1500 and a lot of effort to take almost 2 tons of timber home and finding room to store them.

Whether it is worth it depends on what you believe. I believe it is a horrible waste to send them to the tips. If it takes 100 years to grow a tree then they deserve a second & third life.

Furniture from recycled wood are full of characters and beautiful. It does take a lot more effort. I will find you some pictures.

In Melbourne, for whatever reason, its often called Messmate. I think its all mostly old growth of whatever they cut down so mixed species. I think it looks better than plantation tassie oak I've seen, but there will be nail holes.

Pic 1 : Bathroom wall cabinets (Tas Oak floorboards). I am currently making the doors. I will post some pics tonight. They are beautiful.

Pic 2 : Kitchen island bench top (hardwood beams)

Pic 3 : Bedside tables (Kauri floorboards)

Is that a whole lot of fiddleback in those bathroom cabinets?

Lots of Messmate and Tas Oak/Vic Ash, sometimes you'll get Blackbutt in there too as well as Redgum for stumps.

Aside from nail holes, it will also be quite a bit darker than new timber of the same species. In my experience, it's also very dense and very hard, so your tools won't like it much

I've made a few items from reclaimed frame timber.
Redgum, Bluegum, Vic Ash, Swamp Mahogany (I think), Tallow wood. A big mix from the same house.

A couple of benches made entirely from reclaimed timber
Those were the droids I was looking for.

I’ve been using reclaiming timber almost exclusively. What have you guys been using to fill nail holes ?
Also have you been treating the black stains around the nail holes?

Oxalic acid often works well on black stains. If it does, Parfix 5 min epoxy with sawdust from the timber is as good and easy as it gets. If not, builders bog and black oxide do the job for me.

What black pigment paste do you use?

I used black oxide a couple of times - it makes the epoxy thick so it doesnt flow as well and also kills card scraper and harder on sandpaper

Do you have any pics of the builder's bog + black oxide with finish? I tried the ebony timbermate timber filler from bunnings and even with finish (osmo clear matte) it looks dry and unfinished

Sometimes I use 2 part epoxy mixed with carbon powder. Sometimes I just cannot be bothered.
