Recycled timber - Treated or not?
Hi fellow woodworkers.
I have joined this forum this afternoon and this is my first post so if this is in the wrong place or has been dealt with before please let me know.
I recently got some old Blue Gum decking from my neighbor who got a new deck. The wood is in good condition and just needs a bit of work to expose the good stuff underneath the weathered exterior.
Firstly, I though I might use some of the lengths to make cutting boards to practice some skills, but I am not sure if this timber is treated or not. Is there a way to tell?
The boards are 25mm thick (140Wide) and I would like to get some of them down to 20mm, is there a good place to get some milling done in Sydney? I was looking at Swadlings Timber but they seem fussy about milling second hand wood, has anyone used them or can you recommend another place to go.
Thanks in advance for you help.

Welcome to the Forum.
The reason you may find it hard to find a place to mill them is because they are recycled they may have contaminates - metal and dirt which wears and damages blades.
If you have a 150mm jointer or thicknesser you could do it yourself. A metal detector would be a good investment to detect bits of nails and screws.

G'Day & welcome to a top forum.
I hope you got to go to the Sydney Wood Show last weekend!!
As Blue Gum is an Aussie hardwood it shouldn't be treated except with whatever oil your neighbour used on it as a deck.
About 2 months ago one of the Sydney forum members from Collaroy had some old hardwood sleepers re-sawn in the local northern beaches/suburbs area.
You could sent James a "pm" to ask him some details.

Make sure you show off your handiwork with photos especially WIP photos with build notes..
Enjoy the forum and enjoy your woodwork.
Cheers, crowie

Thanks for the advice guys.
Handyjack. I think I will invest in a thicknesser/planer, I will do some research and as there is no rush on the jobs I may treat myself at Christmas.
Crowie. I will put a few together and post some picks, just starting out as we have just bought a house and I got my first man cave.

Welcome to the forum.
You can always plane these by hand but I still think you need a metal detector. Or a cheap hand held electric planner that you can replace the blades.
As to your original question not sure how to check if the timber is treated.
