    Default Trip to a Vietnamese Plywood Factory

    I was asked by a friend to go with him to Vietnam because he couldn’t work out why they could supply plywood cheaper than the Chinese.


    Well this is the plywood plant.


    As you can see, it like going back into the stone ages.


    Logs are loaded in by hand, machines are crude and parts of the machine are homemade. The machine has no guards or safety devices. Notice the open chain and sprockets. If you accidently put your finger in there, kiss it goodbye, no microsurgery in Vietnam.


    I hope you find the video entertaining. I certainly found the visit to the factory an eye opener.

    Amazingly you can almost visualize workshops here in the early years doing exact same things except for the kid. I bet much of the machines were brought in from OS old plants.

    My dad work hereat such a plant for a short period very short also they made Masonite.

    I used to work for Brims...they made an excellent product, cheap for the quality you got and they had the most well treated employees and cleanest factory environment I've ever seen. Boral have gone too now I think.

    I'm not angry about this anymore, just very dissapointed.

    I can not understand why brims closed up. There product was the best in the market.

    They had there manufacturing to an art including making higher grade particleboard than any one else.

    The range of stock they had was amazing.

    Apparantly the old mans son didn't want to take over, but I can't imagine profits were huge... not when they had to compete with the crap we have now.

    The land value of the site must have been huge.
