Repairing a Record Vice
Hi All ..... somebody stupidly put down an interest in woodworking for their sons kindy information form and as such I have been asked to see if I can repair their Record vice
It would appear that the kids over tighten and have broken something. The threaded rod seems fine and winds the jaws in but doesn't retract the jaws. Before I go in boots and all I just wanted to confirm that I need to knock out the pin just prior to the start of the threaded rod, reinsert the threaded rod (as per the last image) and pit a new split pin in. Would this be correct?
Anything else I need to know so I don't destroy it?
Cheers
Stinky.

The split pin should bear against a washer and I think a small spring.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

Thanks for the confirmation .... I can do the washer without a problem but I might have to give the small spring a miss.

Stinky,
Just happen to have one ready to bolt to a spare bench...looking underneath.
You might need a spacer in place of a spring....or the handle will turn about 5 turns before the jaw moves, that would drive me nuts!
It might be worth a look at the wall-O-springs at bunnies, something might fit, or be cut down to suite length.
Compression Springs available from Bunnings WarehouseThe washer seems to have a slight wave in it.
The spring is under some compression in there also.

Thanks Peter ..... that image is perfect.
Having a think about it I agree that it would be better with the spring. For a few dollars and a trip to Bunnings it may as well be done properly. From what the Director was saying it isn't the first time it as failed (which would account for the lost washer and spring).
Next project they have given me is reattaching the legs onto a bush stool ..... its going to be a busy year for me!
Cheers

Thanks all .... all fixed and back in service. I decided to check the M10 up the road and was suprised to find that they had a good range of springs hidden in a small box. $1.25 each and as I needed to cut it to fit I have a spare. The washer I found in the garage was a little wider that I would have hoped and does rub on the side on closing a little (not helped by a slightly bent shaft) but it will loosen up over time.
Only two more jobs given to me on Friday when I dropped it off.Now proudly sponsored by Binford Tools. Be sure to check out the Binford 6100 - available now at any good tool retailer.
