    Default Research Failure

I've got to ship some delicate oil paintings, family heirlooms, to Europe so I made an exact sized box for each to protect them, the biggest is about 1200mm square.

Very happy with the result, until the shipping agent told me all the wood used in packing boxes to Europe has to be specially treated and ISPM 15 stamped. No way they can be used!

Had not heard of ISPM 15 before so had to google.

It appears that all may not be lost as there are some exemptions with regards the type of timber and thicknesses.

If you need to get the process of heat or chemical treatment done the following may help.

OSB, hardboard/masonite and plywood are exempt. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISPM_15
Innovations are those useful things that, by dint of chance, manage to survive the stupidity and destructive tendencies inherent in human nature.

I was asked to do the same a year ago .
I did as you have except, I used mdf for the whole box.
If that helps and also a ton of bubble wrap inside and outside of the box ,I had my mother and elder sister supervising on that project .

I asked the shipping guy about getting them treated but he said it would be prohibitively expensive.

If I hadn't sold all my machines in the meantime I could have fairly easily cut 12mm off the sides and replaced with plywood (solid wood less than 6mm thick is exempt, as is plywood). I can probably still do that with my old circular saw, but it's a lot of messing about. The shipping guy is going to give me a quote for making boxes, so I'll see if it's worth doing.

Set up a straight guide or use the adjustable guide on the circular saw should work fine. If the bloke has to give you a quote then my presumption would have to be that it will be expensive.

Not sure what sizes you are using for the cases, but I break down ride on mower packing frames for recycled timber for other packing cases etc. These frames come from OS with the mower inside, then are opened at the retailer to remove the unit, and the deck is attached etc for sale. I get mine from Lilydale, but other volume retailers would develop a stack fairly quickly, and either give it away or pay to have it taken away. In summer time I can take 3 trailer loads a week and my supplier can still collect a tilt tray truck load every fortnight.

I have a fair batch of dismantled frames stored away at the moment, and a lot of frames that are awaiting dismantling. Both batches have been indoors for 2 years plus and are dry. Common sizes are roughly 90 x35 and 70 x 35 but there is a fair batch of wider stuff and some about 80 square. Mostly a pine of some sort, and heat treated for exporting around the world from China. About 1 piece in 5 is stamped as heat treated.

Happy to share the contact at my source, or alternatively give you some frames to strip or some material from the stash if it would overcome the issue and allow you to rework the cases you have made. If any use send me a PM and we can swap contact details.
I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.

Thanks for the offer, but I've sold all my equipment so can't remake the boxes. Otherwise that would have been a good way to go.

If I have, to I think I can cut them down and reclad with something allowable using my old circular saw. I'm thinking if I ripped 6mm off the outside and glued on some MDF that would pass muster.
