Default Restoring a Turner No. 5 Handplane

    Hi All

The plane is in very good condition but I want to get the paint spots off the red Lucite (?) handles. I would welcome any solutions.

    Cheers

P.S. Why do so many used hand planes have paint spots?

    P.P.S. Sorry photos to follow

Well the easiest solution would be to give me the #5 and then you wouldn't have to worry about paint spots. I imagine various stages of micromesh would do the job. Being plastic/resin I'd steer clear of any paint removers. I wonder if citristrip or some other citrus oil based stripper would be safe. Investigation time.

I admire your cheek re donation of the #5 to you . Thanks for your suggestion I will try the 'soft' option.

Hey, you miss 100% of the shots you don't take

So the handles are made of cellulose acetate and the solvents for it depends on what acetate chains are present. But it seems that methylene chloride will dissolve cellulose acetate and methylene chloride is probably in most paint strippers. Citristrip claims to be methylene chlroide free but I wonder if there is something else in it that would have an unwanted effect on the knob. If the paint is latex/acrylic, methylated spirits may do the job.

Safe bet, scrape it off gently or just leave it be. I've got this set from the sandpaper man and it's worked well removing scratches from other vintage plastics. It'd be a fair amount of work though, too much for me, I'm keeping my #4 and #5 with somewhat dinged up handles.
