4.234 mm , what's your's
This idea is pretty primeval - it's not that far from firestarting by rotating a stick inside a indentation in a piece of wood.
I have no idea why I do this - my academic colleagues at work are somewhat bewildered, SWMBO thinks it's nice I have an interest that doesn't involve gambling, fast cars or other women, but she is worried about the chain saw obsession. My mother doesn't understand why I need to do any of this seeing as I have such a nice white collar job. I still haven't been able to convince her that no one except the odd super boss wears a white shirt to my work. The guys that are really happy are the workshop techos who know that while their boss in interested in tool making their jobs are safe!

You have all missed a very important point here.
Sounds like a perfect excuse to buy a bench sander or linisher to me.
AND its only to help out the lovely lady. perfect.____________________________

Lots of great advice there guys. I knew I should have bought the wasp sander when I saw it at the show this year. Ended up using the belt sander upside down and It worked out pretty well.
Cheers

if you've got a dremmle, sit on your back step with the box of bits and run a sanding drum over the ends, nice and comfy for a tedios job.
