Satinboard? - what is it?
Does anyone know what Satinboard is?
A specific product from someone? Searching doesn't really produce anything definitive for me
I ask, as I was using a lazy Sunday to look over a few local furniture makers and saw it mentioned at the bottom of this https://www.unekefurniture.com/furni...hes-and-paint/
is it HMR MDF with some sort of laminate topper?
Any ideas welcome!

Not totally sure of the context of your interest, but while cutting kitchen cabinets etc, we used a lot of carcass satin as a base for stuff that was going to be professionally 2 pack painted. I believe that we sourced it through Laminex Industries. The material was an HMR MDF with a neutral coloured melamine coating on both sides. It is definitely flatter than standard MDF, whiteboard, or colourboards, so I suspect that it has some form of a surface skim before the surface is applied. The core material may be a higher density than for normal MDF products, and the MDF skin layers may be thicker also, based upon having to sand edges and ease corners prior to shipping out to be painted. Standard practice where I worked was that we shipped out with sanded edges and eased corners, painter sanded face with a wide belt sander, primed face and edges with a high fill primer, hand sanded face and edges, then applied finish coats. The back surface was always left untouched and had a slightly off white colour to it. From memory we only used 18mm sheets for doors, draw fronts, and face panels.
I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.

We used 18mm for painted panels as well. It's just white melamine on MDF, but with a smooth finish instead of the textured stuff you normally see in cabinets. I think our local board shop got theirs from Carter Holt Harvey, but all the panel producers make it under various trade names
