    Default Sawdust and shavings.

    Hi Everyone,
I have a bit of a weird question.
I am doing some work experience in a carpentry business, we make cedar doors/Windows, and also fireplace surrounds mostly. This weeke i have been machining 1.5ton of New Guniea Rosewood, to make 11 Solid Panel doors, they are 2.4mtrs tall, with a 1050 and 850 panel sections. They will look awesome when complete.
Anyway back to the reason for posting.
We have been generating like close to 4 large garbage bags of sawdust and wood shavings everyday. An old guy used to come and colect 4 bags every week to use in his horse stables, but we think he may have passed away.
Does anyone know where we could get rid of all this sawdust, or who may want it, other than just dumping it.
    Any advise would be great.

A post on this before agreed on the best solution was to fill the ute without a cover and take a 2 hour drive, I think, not only took shmbo happy ( drive where ever she wants to go ) but got rid of the shavings

Stockpile it and sell it as mulch.

Put some blood and bone with it and put it on your garden.

Do a search on the WW forums and see what others have done

    Default Surplus Shavings

I have found this to always be a problem. I have two people that take mine for their chook shed, 1 who collects to mix in with his green waste in the compost and another who use it for bedding for his breeding rabbits and guinea pigs.....but when I undertake a bit of concerted dressing I still have surplus. I have a bush block so when I visit I take it with me and spread around as mulch, must be the ultimate in recycling , returning it to the bush from where it came.

Hornet I know how you feel. At work (wood machinists) we would fill two bulk fertiliser bags a day at least. Not bad for only 3 blokes. We just let the local horse club know that they can have the sawdust and shavings for almost free and also contacted the local landscaping mob. Between them we easily get rid of all sawdust we make.

Do they have a forklift? I'll try to get some photos of the rack I made to hold the bags. The bags aren't to hard to get a hold of. Contact the nearest feed mob. They get salt in them for mixing into the feed and sometimes the bags are just burnt after use.
Have a nice day - Cheers

Only certain types of wood can be used as bedding for horses, it must be 100% free of walnut shavings and dust , bedding a horse in walnut and various other woods can cause the animal to die, there for if you plan to give it to horse farms be sure you know exactly what type of wood is in the bag and filters , cows however dont seemed to be bothered by this.

This seems to be quite a common problem.

I tend to quarter-fill my wheelie bin every third or fourth week, and I'm just a weekend warrior.

    A few thoughts present themselves:

1: sell the sawdust/shavings/chips to a manufacturer of BBQ briquettes (assuming that they use timber?)

2: sell the stuff to a paper maker - it might even lessen the need/demand for woodchipping!

3: bring back the medieval craft of having a charcoal maker on the edge of the forest (read suburbs ) for making low cost BBQ briquettes.

4: with the price of petrol as it is (and it's going to get worse), rig up a WW2 type gas generator for the car/van/ute/whatever burning sawdust

My mother recently asked me to give her my clean dust and shavings after she visited a garden with sawdust pathways.. exceptionly nice to walk on but as far as I reckon she'll need a constant suply of the stuff to keep the paths topped up. looks grand tho, especially as the shavings I provide are always different so the path changes colour here and there.

beats the hell out of stones or chip bark for the kiddies too.. might have to make a path at my place... but then I'd have to build something for the path to lead to wouldn't I.

I take mine to my daughters acreage and deposit in the woods (sort of back to nature) Often as not when I go there I pass a fellow who has a cattle lot which is always muddy, as a rule he asks for it to soak up the muck. But on a windy day, you could dust the neighborhood:eek:

They are using mostly Western red, although this week we machined 2 ton of New Guniea Rosewood.

We make about 25 garbage bags full a week and all we do is bag it up and place it out the front with a sign saying "FREE WOOD SHAVINGS PLEASE TAKE A BAG" and it all goes very quickly, we have actualy had some people come in and ask if we have more.
