Default How to make sawdust from veneer?

I have some myrtle burl veneer I bought in Tassie years ago on a holiday. When you hold a sheet up to the light you can see lots of holes and cracks. These are surrounded by a tan /brown veneer that I would like to fill with epoxy mixed to the same colour.

Matching this colour is a fair pain, I never seem to get it right, even with acrylic paints or paint powders added to the epoxy.

I am thinking that the better solution would be to make sawdust from the small 50 x50mm offcuts. There are quite a few of them. Tried cutting them up and putting in my wife's food grinder, but to no avail. No dust, and the pieces came out smelling of onions

I would like your ideas and suggestions on how to make sawdust from small pieces of veneer please
    regards,

    Dengy

Hook up the vac to a belt sander to collect the dust. Clamp a stack of bits together in the vice and have at it. Finer grit size will give finer dust.

I use home made sanding dust from my ROS as an epoxy thickener. Any dust from a coarse abrasive should do. Obviously you need to clean out the collection container before sanding so you get consistent dust. Since veneer is very thin it might be easier to clamp a lot of pieces together and sand the side of the pack.

I find that mixing any sanding dust with epoxy makes it darker than the original timber colour. Diluting with a white powder may help but you will still have the need for trial and error.

And most important: did you manage to conceal the "illegal" kitchen activity?

Thanks Bob. Actually it was my wife who suggested the idea of the food grinder and tried it for me. It caught her out too. I hate onion, cannot digest it, and this test result showed she has been grinding it up and adding to my food. Sneaky devil

I have collected dust from sanding - both ROS and hand sanding. I have Jarrah, Blackwood and Blackbutt stored in plastic coin bags - not sure I will ever use any but it is there if needed.

Thanks everyone. The vital clue above was to clamp it all together and sand it. I used a large sheet of 180 grit sandpaper glued to a sheet of plate glass that I use for flattening the lids and the box after the lid has been cut off on the table saw. Swept it all up with a small $1 brush, better than scraping the dust across the paper with a piece of timber, gets more dust for some reason.. Good result, pics attached

When you say it is a large sheet of sandpaper does that mean it is larger than a normal A4 sheet? If so, where do you get them from?

    Thanks,

The Sandpaper Man, one of this forum's sponsors, sells them in rolls 600mm wide. I got 180 and 240 grit rolls
