I can get 3 phase run to the workshop and I can see the benefits machinery options wise, but I am thinking the cost to do so is more than $1000. In the process, I will ask the question again to see what a firm price could be

If you can get 3 phase then do it early. it will affect your decision and how you work, not sure if you are willing to invest but if its only for hobby then probably not worth it.

When I did my 3 phase upgrade it costed close to $10,000 NZD. its not just the main cable and install fuses at your boundary. A trench at least 600mm deep to bury the line form the street fuse to the house, new switchboard, fuse, line to individual sockets/plugs... I had about 3-4 plugs only (significantly not enough). all industrial grade. its cry once laugh forever.
