    Default sheet optimisation programs

I have started to make some kitchen cabinets and would like to know if anyone can help with an easy way to work out the cutting list to get the most out of the standard 2400 x 1220 sheets of board . I know there are computer programs that can do it but they are not cheap. Are their any free programs out there that work?

You could try cutlist plus http://cutlistplus.com/ . The free version allows for a maximum of 5 parts per project but up to 1000 peices per part.

e.g. if you building 5 cabinets you can enter the sides in as 1 part but with 10 pieces.

Yes. Called pencil and paper. Draw the parts, and the standard sheet, to the same scale; on graph paper if necessary. Cut out the images of the parts. Slide the images around on the image of the sheet until satisfied with the layout, with allowance for saw cuts. Transfer the layout to the sheet.

    Cheers,

If I remember rightly there was a post about Google Sketchup having this facility in it which is a free download. Do a search on Google Sketchup.

I agree with Pen and paper as it is simple on one job much easier than learning a new program. I love computer programs but they take time to learn.

I machine cabinets and just cut what I need using my head. Another useful option is to use a a machining company then they will tell you how many sheets you need, much simpler.

It is more a question of design if for example you build cabinets 610mm deep you may well get only one row of components from that sheet but at 590mm 0r 600 + saw kerf you will get 2 rows from the sheet. see how changing the size of components can effect the project. same with drawer and door etc.

Only drama is registering every month to continue using it, but it's free and does the job.

BTW we have changed the registration process on v2 of MxCut so it works on unique usage days instead of monthly registrations.

So for instance, if you use the program once a month, you would only have to request a new code every 30 months... instead of the method in v1 where you would need to request a code on the 1st of each month, which was a pain.

    Default Cut list

    AJ
    G'day Y'll
Push comes to shove, you can send me the size and grain of the parts and I can plug them into Cut List Pro. It does not take all that long, especially if they are in a spreadsheet.
It will save you two to three sheets on a medium size kitchen, I had the program in the shop computer and when I shut the cabinet shop down I brought the computer home with me, Have not used it in the last year and a half.
    Regards
    Joe
