Shelix Cutter Head
Has anyone out there had experience with installing a Shelix cutterhead on a generic 15" Carba Tec thicknesser and how much noise reduction is there ?
I live on the North Shore - Sydney and would be very interested in seeing/hearing one of these in operation.
I have to replace my 13" thicknesser due to the noise level. My neighbour has lost his sense of humour.
Many thanks

It would be interesting to find out, I have Email the business twice about replacing mine and have yet to receive a reply, I don't know if he is in business or not.
Cheers

I've been in contact with Robert, he emailed a drawing for the generic 15" thicknessers(includes the carbatec) but I'm unsure if I can post it up? I havent checked it against my machine yet.
The price was about $1400(mid last year).....................................................................

Hi All,
This is the feedback I gave someone else when they asked.
Cheers,

Hi All,
I've got the same head installed in an SCM 12" over & under machine (Combination thicknesser/jointer.) Installed it for noise and surface finish considerations.
I can use the machine without a neighbour hearing any noise inside a house that's 20' from the machine. It's quiet and cuts figured wood well.
Makes chip collection easier - (they're all tiny shavings, not stringy ones,) and it cuts figured wood without tearout. (well, a tiny bit of tearout near knots where the grain is perpendicular to the surface.)
The surface needs a light sand and it's done. No chattermarks.
Another advantage is that if you nick a blade, you only need to rotate one insert, not resharpen/reset the blades.
The downside is the cost, but in the case of my previous cutterhead, each blade change took up to 6 hours as the outfeed table of the jointer was fixed/non-adjustable, so I had to set something accurate to 5 thou by trial and error - the blade setting jigs were useless in the case of this machine.
If it was a thicknesser only, this wouldn't have been a problem.
The inserts are throwaway, can not be resharpened. ie: ongoing costs are a bit more than usual. Advantage is that the changeover is quick and painless, and there's no need to reset the machine.
Inserts got a bit blunt after about 300 lineal metres of she-oak, but it did machine the ray figure without tearout.
Cheers,
eddie

and a data point from someone else
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
>
In their case, Noise level went from 94dB to 74dB when dressing 3 x 2" pine (75% reduction in peak value, as 10dB = double the noise level.) I'd imagine this is the difference between a blunt set of straight knives and a sharp set of helical cutters, so, comparing apples and apples the difference may not be as great.
I've noticed huge noise reduction but haven't got the inclination to play around with a noise meter.
Cheers,
eddie

Between 3~6db reduction is half as loud(person dependent)... 10db is a huge reduction!
