    Default Shoji Screens

After a recent visit to Japan we have been inspired to create a Japanese garden room on one of our decks at home. As the Shoji will be partly exposed to the elements the traditional rice paper will not suffice. I have thought of a thin waterproof ply painted white but wonder if anyone has any ideas of alternative materials?

assuming that you can make the delicate frame that shoji demands, the panels are supposed to be semi translucent.
For exposure to the weather I'd be looking at a synthetic (plastic) paper like that used for architectural plans.

    Difficult one, Cap'n

Ian's idea might work, provided that the drafting film - often called mylar - will stand up to UV.

Also milk white glass, but shoji is so light that it might not bear the weight of glass.

Have you yet discovered the writings on shoji by Des and Mariko King? I have three books - great sources - on design, technique and philosophy.

I don't think that i'd worry too much about UV degradation. If you were to use rice paper, you would normally replace it every year or so because it's impossible to really clean the dust off it, so "cleaning" involves replacing the paper.

A mate commercially made shoji screens about 30 years ago. From memory he used a light sail material of some sort.Obviously weatherproof and translucent to a certain extent. We did a restaurant fit out but my memory is blank on any more detail.H.
