Shorncliffe Pier Timber - EOI for Community Groups

Hi Folks, The famous Shorncliffe Pier is being rebuilt and the Brisbane City Council is offering up timber from the old pier for community groups to use. I am a member of Sandgate Yacht Club and our club has a long history with the Shorncliffe Pier. In fact, part of the new design will include the flag mast that was often used for Sandgate Yacht Club races. I intend to apply for some of the timber, the only problem is I have no idea what to do with, so I am looking for some ideas. The EOI is asking for the amount and type of timber wanted.

At this stage I want to make 2 things, a picture frame that will hold a photo of the pier with the Sandgate Yacht Flag flying from the flag mast at the end of the pier. The other thing I want to make is some sort of trophy. So folks, if you have any creative ideas that I could use that would be great. Would be nice to have a long term piece of furniture for the club, and maybe something we can donate to the local historical society/museum.

It is. I am going to try and get as much as I can store. Would be nice to incorporate some of the larger pieces into the yacht club somehow. Fortunately we have some fantastic boat builders, carpenters and cabinet makers among our members, so we should be able to string a few pieces together.

When the Hornibrook Highway was dismantled the Redcliffe Woodworkers Guild did bowls & pen as fund raisers for the Redcliffe Hospital.
I was lucky enough to purchase one with a certificate and a pink bridge ticket, we used to go to see my dads parents at Margate most Sunday afternoons.
Shorncliffe was a picnic spot after dad buying a couple of pound of prawns off the trawlers at the Shorncliffe wharf on Cabbage Tree Creek.
I hope one of the local woodworking groups from either Sandgate or Redcliffe get a good lump of the old pier timber to make some bowls, pens and the like as community fund raisers.

I am happy to get involved with any other groups too. Like I said, SYC has a special relationship with the pier so anything we can add to the local community would be great. I would hate to see this timber go to corporations, would rather it stay local whether it be for fundraising or for use in local projects.

FWIW, I am also the commodore of SYC (been sailing there for the best part of 30 years now) and I think we could also put some pressure on the local Councillor to get the timber. I might even pay her a personal visit tomorrow.

And the winner is the SYC Sailors Bar!!

Going to see if we can secure enough timber to replace the bar tops in the downstairs 'wet' bar. Might add half a dozen stools to that as well.

At this stage, I reckon the deck timber or joists might be the go for the bar top. I can joint and laminate the pieces together. Stools I will try to try to go for the timber kerb or handrails. Eitherway, I will make something work!



EDIT. Also forgot to say I will make a dozen picture frames and get that photo printed and installed! I will hand these out to community groups to keep or to sell/raffle off for fundraising.

But its 22' and has 2 hulls and goes really fast! Am I forgiven if I am attending the wooden boat fest in Tassie?

Sounds perfect for Moreton Bay; I played with a little Hobbicat up and down the pier at Hervey Bay in the mid1960's then in the 1970's it was a large [but small] grey steel steam powered war ship [still got seasick].....I thing the cat was more fun....
