It's "only" 19% Graeme. So a pretty accurate way to determine the price is to take 16% off it (actually 15.966 so 16 is close enough). Then divide that by 0.60 to get a conservative estimate in Aussie dollars.

Thanks guys. So I havent drilled the holes yet in the table as I would like to get clamps first. I notice on the DS site that there are various clamping depths. Do you think 60mm is too shallow? That would mean I prob need holes 55mm apart right? I feel like 100mm depth would be more useful. Would like peoples thoughts on that if you've had the experience

The spec's on those clamps don't look right to me. The size is quoted as 250mm clamping capacity x 175mm throat depth with a 27mm wide bar. This is way too big and heavy for your purpose. The weight is quoted as 1.2Kg, a clamp of the dimensions they're quoting is going to weigh more like 2Kg. If the size spec's are correct though they're an absolute bargain at $20. I guess there's a possibility it could be right (except for the weight), they might have been bought when the A$ was above parity and they might have marked them down to move them?

The lighter versions of this type of clamp with an 80mm throat depth is more likely to suit your purpose. They're available with screw handles as well as the bar type drive and they typically have 15mm x 7.5mm bars. So plenty strong enough, but I'm unsure whether the head would fit through your 20mm holes.

I bought some of those clamps from Total Tools. They are actually not bad but they will not fit thru 20mm holes.

The only other issue that I have with them is that they tend to mark the timber.

A possible alternative are these clamps https://www.microjig.com/store/match...ovetail-clamps

From memory, Popular Woodworking was happy with them.

Anything in this style of clamp with 100mm throat depth is going to be too big for you. The minimum bar size for 100mm depth is 19 x 9.5mm and the clamping pad is about 30mm wide and 40mm long, it's just way too heavy for your needs. I sell a ratchet 100 x 225 forged steel clamp and there's no way I would recommend for your intended purpose.

You'd be better off looking at 60mm throat clamps like the ones DS has - https://www.fine-tools.com/clamp.html (if you look around I'm sure you'll find something very similar available in Australia) or something like these 80mm throat ones - 2pc 80x250mm HD All Steel F-Type Screw Bar Clamps Go-Thru Wrench Diver Handle | eBay If you want the ratchet type you're pretty much limited to the DS ones.

If you used 80mm throat clamps surely you wouldn't need holes at any less than 120mm centres? What's the hole placement on a Festool MFT?

Same thing as the DS Fine Tools dovetail clamps except with a plastic handle instead of a wooden one.

The TTI clamp Bohdan linked to is unlikely to have a bar size bigger than 15.5 x 7.5 and as he says the clamping head won't fit through a 20mm hole.

I'd agree that there is something wrong there. It would not be the first time I've seen wild inaccuracies....

IF the pics are right, then the clamp is about 2½ times the length of it's width. 330 / 2.5 = 132mm outside dimension, which would yield a internal throat of about 80mm. I would suggest that the 175mm is actually 125mm.

My experience is to make absolutely sure of everything.

Thank you for mentioning this. I got curious, as I am sniffing around for a decent set of brad point drills and forstner bits myself. Could I trouble you for thoughts on which brand and type might be best?

I also found their shipping costs to Australia on this page: https://www.fine-tools.com/versand.html

It will come as no surprise to those who know me that I would say Colt brand is the best value for money. Famags may be exceptional performance, but so is the price. Suffice to say that I have every Metric & Imperial Brad Point that Colt makes, and every M&I Forstner bit up to 45mm plus a couple of special sizes such as 57mm for vac connector blast gates.

Note that Colt is no longer made in Germany. They are now French made and appear to be identical excellent quality, but the service from the supplier has gone through the roof since they were sold.

Yep, service actually happens these days, and when they say "out of stock, but ready in week 42" that is when it happens. None of this two years later tosh (and from Chermany )

    Thanks Midnight

My experience with Dieter Schmidt reflects his absense of hype. Actual delivery times to Hobart have been 10-14 days, occasionally faster, rarely slower.

    Cheers
