Sourcing Timber (Eastern Suburbs NSW)
Ok I have a problem....
As with most things in the Eastern Suburbs in NSW a lot is overpriced (I'm only a pensioner though ).
A trip through the local Bunnings and Mitre 10 doesn't give me any hopes of putting together a work bench to get started at any reasonable cost (unless I pinch their packing crates ).
So I'm wondering about sourcing timber in this area? Does anyone know of a good place to get some decent timber at a relatively decent price? Any idea what price I should actually be expecting to pay?
My other problem is that until I build a bench I don't actually have any place to cut timber so I need it cut to size.........
Cheers

I have found greg Ward very reasonable if you are prepared to take a trip over the bridge (best in non peak time to save on toll). He is cleaning up his yard so there may be some specials.

Do you have an address Graham?
I'd be interested in checking him out but don't usually have access to a car (I'm vision impaired). So it requires a bit of planning

Greg Ward can be contacted via the forums as he is a member here, just be aware that he is not a merchant/timber yard but helps his brother Mal move some timber

Couple of comments:
Greg (Mal) Ward are excellent suppliers of timber. They tend to carry local varieties of "fine" timber like cedar, silky oak rosewood, as well as timbers like maple, oak, etc. I have used cedar from them, and found it excellent timber, at a good price. They are variable rough sawn boards, so you need to be able to bring this to finished machined timber.
Also I am not sure if they would have varieties suitable for a bench. PM Greg and ask.
Bunnings/ Miter 10 supply finished machined, but are very expensive. Also you are unlikely to get anything other than radiata pine from bunnings, (possibly some tassie oak). mitre, (near me anyway) might also have pacific maple, merbau and western red cedar, but limited range of sizes.
Well away from your area, but alternatives are:
North Shore Timbers, Thornleigh. Vic ash, Tassie, P Maple, pine etc. Dressed timber, in a better range of sizes and choice. Still exxy, but better than above.
Matthews Timber in St Marys. Full range of local and typical imported timbers. Rough sawn. Prices are quite good. I have had NZ Beech, tassie and vic ash from them. Limited opening hours, and a long way from you.
Anagote timbers in Marrickville. Rough sawn, and a good range of imported axotics and local. Haven't been there for some time, but remember prices as a bit steep.
Trend timbers, Windsor. Also a long way out, and tends to be expensive, but possibly the best range of imported and exotics.Alastair
