Thread: Spiders in the shed

Geez, I feel lucky to live in metro melbourne. I could count the number of huntsmen I see annually on one hand. In the six years I've lived in my house I haven't seen anything other than harmless insects. I don't even hesitate to poke my hand into dark corners and untouched boxes in the shed!
Honestly, there wouldn't be so many spiders up north if there were no insects for them to feed on. Live and let live. Of course, if one impedes on the other then it's survival of the fittest; bomb them!"Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so."

Look at it this way. Get bitten by a redback, need anti venom, there's a few shed hours wasted.

It takes a brave man to say he's not worried about snakes or spiders, maybe if you lived up here in queensland you might think differently, especially when you go to put your hand in to get some wood and a nice taipan or angry brown snake latches on. i don't think you would be so brave as to say we're a bunch of sooks then.

and maybe a couple of crocs for good measure or perhaps you would like some dengue from the mozzies or leptospirosis from the rats

thanks for your replies everyone,
we've got a professional coming to do the house soon so I might get him to do the shed too (might cover the tools and wood first)
If it was a big shed I probobly wouldn't bother, but when you work in a 4 by 2.2 m one, your really working with them
Thanks for the Lem oil idea Beer is GoodBrody- 15 - Lake Cathie

Wolfie please don't make ridiculous assumptions.
I have travelled quite extensively and I know that some of the snakes up FNQ are dangerous whereas down here all the snakes are potentially lethal but only if they bite you. We don't have pythons and other harmless snakes down here apart from pets.
Like I indicated, if the reason you kill snakes and spiders is because you feel they are a threat to your life then perhaps you should firstly kill things that are a much greater threat.
I suspect that most people kill these animals because of mixed up ideas in their heads and attempt to justify it by making out every lots of people dies from their toxins.
I have had quite a bit of experieice with snakes in fact I have two harmless pythons as pets both natives from QLD.
Most people who are bitten by snakes are either trying to catch them or trying to kill them - both actions ridiculous.

So Rob, you're saying that critters can survive the Tolmie cold? They're tougher than I.
I found a nice long snake skin in my workshop the other day, it "snaked" out of a pile of timber across to the lathe. I say wear boots and watch where you step

FC,
I still have fond memories of watching you shiver in "warm" weather but you weren't quite as cold as Journeyman Mick when he visited.
My snakes have heaters.
I wear boots and long trousers when in snake country because I respect them and I am quite aware of the consequences of a bite I do however think they are beautiful creatures.

your kidding right, so you have travelled extensively in far north qld and you think we have only 1 deadly type snake, try a red belly black, a king brown an eastern brown, a taipan the most deadly we have, death adders, even some of our green tree snakes are venmous as they have bred with a brown, so do i need to go on. i lived in vic for several years and backed on to a creek the only thing we had to watch out for were tiger snakes.
so is this a pissing contest to see who has the most deadliest creatures, or is it about helping another forumite rid his shed of spiders, try and keep on track with what people need help with.

well we're here to give each other help on the subject they require, this happens so often when someone posts a question and then next minute the subject has gone right off tangent, it serves no purpose, just stay on the subject and we would all benefit for the info.

Smeds,
I don't believe that I indicated that I think you only have one type of venomous snake but if that's how you read my post I am sorry for your interpretation.
You seem to have your back up because I have a different view to you, try and calm down and have a sensible and rational discussion by considering and respecting the views of other people.
You don't have to change your mind just because you consider a different view to your views. You may learn something or even further justify your own views.
The question was asked how to get rid of spiders. I put forward my views that perhaps the spiders don't need to exterminated this led to killing snakes which in most cases I strongly disagree.
I don't wish to have a slanging match but more than happy to participate in a healthy discussion.
Wolfie, from memory I think you come from Tully (doesn't show when I am writing a reply) so I guess you have quite a few species with all the rainfall you receive.
I realise that lots of people are afraid (sh#t scared) of spiders and snakes and my fascination with them is not some ridiculous bravado - I'm a bit too old for those sorts of stupid games.- Wood Borer

Wood borer, I spent a pleasant afternoon in your shed but I had assumed you were a licensed breeder
