Spiders in the shed
Hey everyone,
Just wondering if its a good idea to use an insect bomb in the shed or not. I'm worried that it might affect the tools, or if theres a better way to get rid of all the spiders about my shed.
Thanks.Brody- 15 - Lake Cathie

I alway think "the spiders eat the mozzies, and the birds eat the spiders. " Its spider city round here too. And Moth city. And I saw some newly fledged baby birds bumbling about today. It prolly makes me sound a bit potty, but everything has its place. :hippie:

Have you been bitten by a spider? I have not because I use chemicals.
I give the shed the ocasional spray when required. I have seen the odd funnel web and other nasties so reach for a can of spray every so often. This time of year is worst. I dont think you will need the bomb unless the joint is really movin. I usually just use surface spray where they lurk and at entry points. If you are worried about the tools then just cover them up when using a spray. Dont get me wrong I am as green and environmental as the next person but some of those bities can ruin your day.
Regards
John

I'm in Vic so we don't have funnel web spiders YET. I'd prolly spray if there was those around too.

What she said!!! Spiders catch the flies and mossies, and I've never been bitten by the former. Why introduce another poison that may have follow-on effects. Even my kids now catch spiders in the house and release them outside instead of reaching for the spray... hang on, we don't have any!!

Well if the spiders catch the flies and the mosies, they are certainly slacking off big time in my shed, I have bomed my shed once in the 3 years I've been here it worked wonders put a big dent in the population, I now just follow up with a surface spray.

I only swat Redbacks.
I put cokroach baits out and sometimes have to deal with the od rat.

But spiders don't eat ant nor cockraoches and they build cobwebs in every crook and nanny that attract sawdust and other dust.
Sawdust attract moisture and moisture create rust so, definitely, it is spray city up here.
Even my kids now catch spiders in the house and release them outside instead of reaching for the spray...
Blessing in disguise for them
Yes, I spray and I bomb but they still have a population explosion every night
It is a wonderful feeling getting out of bed in the morning and walking straight into a cobweb that has been built during the night. NOT

If they are still there in droves why bother? I am surrounded by trees so figure that if I kill the ones in there, more will just move in to take their place. I've got a beauty up there at the moment. I think I'll call her Freda. You could just vacuum them up every night when you vacuum up the shavings?

After vacumming up the live spiders and insects, don't spray insect killer down the nozzle and turn the vacumm cleaner back on, as one ex-dickhead did...

I have tried lemon oil in my spider factory and it seems to work. It does not kill them but apparently they can't stand the lemon smell. My policy is if they stay out of the way then I will leave them alone. Mind you, I am a bit more scared of them having met a bloke recently who was bitten by a white tailed spider, went to hospital and came within six hours of having his leg amputated.
The lemon oil is the stuff you put in the little burners with tea candles. Put a couple of drops in a half litre spray bottle and spray around where you see the webs or spiders.

Citronella oil, is that the stuff?

Might try that in tool boxes to keep the borer beetle away.
Broda; have you considered moving your shed to New Zealand? I've only got half the spiders I used to have and they're only a third of the size and as an added bonus it completey fixed the snake problem. Haven't seen one for years.
We don't know how lucky we are......
