When I get a splinter I try not to let the wife know as she always tells me to wear gloves.

As a kid we had a jar of white thick ointment which was put on any splinters that broke off under the skin or were for any other reason impossible to remove. Certain timber drives you nuts when it festers.
It was called magneplasm and it caused them to pop out after a day or so.
I remembered this back in the 80s and managed to buy some from the local chemist.
I don't know if it still available but if it is it's worth having.

I had a quick look. Magneplasm is made in Australia and its readily available in stores and online. I'll have to try it.

Yep, although Magneplasm Splintex is the current version more suited to splinters. I very much remember a trip in the fifties to the chemist with the old man being very dubious of this product that was being spruiked by the chemist.

I had fallen into a lot of timber off-cuts where the old man and his friends were building our house, I had a myriad of small splinters. In the main it did work.

Up to now, if I couldn't dig them out I have waited for them to grow out. However this doesn't always work. I had a graphite splinter under my skin for years and years. That can not have been healthy.
Must remember to buy some of this stuff for the future.

Magnoplasm is a paste of Magnesium Sulphate (Epsom Salts) and its main use was for drawing out the gunk from boils etc.
Glass splinters can be very dangerous as they can enter the blood stream and travel round the body so must always be removed ASAP. I doubt that Magnoplasm will work for them however.

small pliers from victorinox pocket knife is my tool of choice for splinter extraction.. so far.. quick and easy extraction every time...
Basically its like tweezers on steroids.. excellent grip and ability to dig deep when needed...
