    Default Sth Australian Suppliers

    Hi all in South Australia.

Where do you go for your tools and, more particularly, machines?

The phone book is not much help as it frequently doesn't tell you if they are retailers or just an import agency. Sometimes the best don't advertise very boldly.

    So, some help please.

I know Adelaide and surrounds quite well so just names and maybe addresses will do.

    Thanks in anticipation
    GeoffS

    try MIK international.

I'm from melbourne but payed a visit there earler this week. I can't remember the spelling of the street name (maggil Macgil?)
basically it is a continuation of North terrace.
    otherwise give telstra a call.

you wont be disappointed in what they have to offer.

    regards

A few places I have found good for quality tools and good service:
    - MIK International on Magill Road at Stepney (not far from the corner of Stepney Rd and Magill Rd). I agree with the other comments on these guys - they are the best if you are a serious hobbiest! The place is always staffed with friendly and knowledgeable woodworkers. They have plenty of stock, including a good range of quality machines on display (e.g jointers (buzzers), thickness, bandsaws, tablesaws, lathes, etc). The only problem I have with this place is that I haven't won the lottery yet!
    - I found Glenfords Tools pretty good for hand-held power tools. I found the staff there usually pretty helpful and their prices are always very good. They also do a lot of their own tool repairs and services. I think they recently moved to Grange Road at Welland and took over the old David Trembath shop. I haven't visited them since they moved from North East Road at Hampstead.
    - Not sure what happened to David Trembath's - they use to sell some very nice stuff, including Jet machinery...
    - Flintware/Gasweld/EPTS/whatever are also very good for hand power tools. They have a number of shops all around town.
    - Leda Machinery have some good machines. I think they import machinery made in China under their own badge. They're out at Richmond Rd, Richmond.
    - Woodfast continue to sell machinery under their label. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they now import machinery from China.
    - If you're really serious about woodworking machines (ie commercial capacity) Gabbetts is the place for European machinery.
    - From time to time you can find used stuff at Paramount Browns. A friend of mine works there and it is surprising what widows end up selling to them now and then!
    - I found the Bunnings Warehouses to be OK if you are looking for low price brands (eg GMC). I've found their range of the more serious brands (DeWalt, Makita, etc) pretty limited!

If you can wait until 25-27 July you should go to the Working With Wood Show ( ) at the Showgrounds. You should see most of the machinery and tool retailers operating in Adelaide all in one place at the same time.
This time, we didn't forget the gravy.

    Thanks guys.

It is the machinery rather than power tools that I am interested in. We have a Bunnies up here not much smaller than their Mile End store and it carries all the usual range. I think it has just as much crammed into a somewhat smaller space.

It looks like MIK is the where I'll be looking first. I'll have a look at Leda and Woodfast also.

I know about Gabbetts - be nice but like you Ndru - I haven't won the lottery either!

I won't be around for the Woodshow - heading the opposite direction to do some carpentry for my sister at that time.

    Thanks again

    G'day again
ndru, I'm out of touch with whats available now, my recollections are that woodfast sold chinese stuff under the hafco banner. Leda gear is made in taiwan. I have a 12" sliding table saw from them which is good for the price, but not perfect. Like many machines, learn its little excentricities and its ok.
    cheers

    Greetings all,

Have just been speaking with David Trembath and team. David is heading towards retirement and Glenford now own the operation. Glenford - apart from selling power tools, source their machines from Carba-Tec. JET equipment and parts are still available ex Vic. Talk to Adam Taylor if you wish @ 75 Grange Rd Welland.

Geoff, that aside, the above contacts should see you right - especially MIK

    Cheers

Rod - thanks for the corrections on Leda and Woodfast.

Brian - interesting news about David Trembath and Jet tools.

I have seen a lot of Carbatec stuff at Mik's nice new shop. They also sell Delta, presumably through Carbatec. Interestingly, when I asked Carbatec who their SA service center for Delta was they said it was Glenfords. When Glenfords were at Hampstead Gardens they did have some own-brand, small workshop machinery but it looked like it was all Chinese. I think they had one piece of Delta machinery at the time. I must go out to Glenford's new store one day - perhaps when I buy that nice new Milwaukee Sawzall I saw at the Tradesman's show last week...

Thanks again to everybody. I think I can fill in a day in Adelaide now!!

Yes - Durden is still made, it is part of the Hercus group. They used to make things for the DIY market but I suspect they have grown beyond that. Maybe somebody else knows more about them.
