The hydrocarbon resins in the resin ducts in the wood are usefully poisonous to insects, bacteria and fungi.
But, damp on the ground and I won't give a spruce log 5 years before you can kick a hole in it.
Joke here is that the carpenter ants and boring beetles get the standing wood first.
