    Default Straight Edge

    Hi Guys,

I have recently purchased a second hand jointer and want to set it up properly (as best I can).
Total length of the infeed and outfeed is about 1500mm.
I have been looking at buying a decent straight edge but noticed they come at 36" (~965mm) long.

Is that enough or should I use a longer straight edge ?
What straight edge do you use ?
Is a new long level going to do the job or are they too inaccurate (if I use filler guages).

    Thanks!
    Nick

I was setting up a jointer and wasn't convinced the 1m ones would do. I picked a 1.5m one from here: Straight Edges - Products - Precision Specialty Tooling

It was pricey (about $250ish) but it's been super useful for so much more. I posted the same thing when looking and a few suggested aluminium extrusion would also work.

Thick walled box section aluminium will do the job just fine, that's what the tech used to set up the one at work

I use a piece of aluminium sliding door extrusion, tested true for straight. Three bits of thin paper under the straight edge on the tables and if all tight, she's flat.

I have varying lengths of 75 x 25 x 2 RHS aluminium that always stay straight.

TL;DR The shorter straight is probably all you need.

If the two tables are found to be flat according to the shorter straight edge; then according to the laws of geometry, the use of the shorter straight edge will prove when the two tables are coplanar.
