Default STRONG support for MDF table top?

I'd like to build a pool table, probably with an MDF top (sounds like slate is very expensive.)

However, I'm curious what the best support would be so the tabletop doesn't sag.
I thought about putting many pieces of MDF standing up on a table, in a mesh form - but that means the table They are on will sag.

So, what about putting a sheet of MDF on top of many rows of planed 2x4s, screwed to the frame?

Any way, what do you suggest?

    Thanks.

I don't know anything about building a pool table, but what you're describing sounds similar to a torsion box, which is often used to build a dead flat table for assembling furniture. I think it would probably achieve what you want - do a Google search for the term "torsion box".

    Good luck!

You could use rectangular steel tube, say 50 by 25, instead of wood. I did that under my router table top and it works well.
