Suggestions on timber to use for a bench
Hi All,
I am looking at purchasing some timber for a bench seat before too long, and just wanted to hear about any pros/cons of some of the types of timber I am contemplating at the moment.
My main concern is having the boards cup or warp. I don't know if any given timber is less prone to this than another, but if any of the following definitely are, then please let me know.
- Kapur
- Batu
- Pelewan
- Jarrah (assuming I can afford it).
Half of this bench will be mostly undercover, but the other half will be exposed to the elements all the time. Is it right to assume that with regular maintenance, all of these timbers should last a long time without defects? Also, is decking timber suitable for a bench, or should timber for a bench typically be wider/thicker than decking timber?
Any hints on suppliers in Perth is also most appreciated. I know Colli timber and hardware have their specials on until 29th November and Gunns have just been advertising Jarrah decking at ~$5 per l/m too. Not sure of the dimensions of that, but I'll have to give them a buzz and find out.
Thanks,
Chris

Chris,
The timbers used for decking should be ok. I made one from the deck offcuts and leftovers. Mine was merbau but any of the decking timbers should do. To get a nice look I used brass screws. Finished with deck oil and it gets a lick every time the deck does. Mine is under cover but gets wet with wind blown rain and sun part of the day. Has not warped so far in about 5 years.
Regards
John

If you are put off by the cost of Jarrah, try using some recycled timbers. I get a lot of stuff from Vince's salvage in Bayswater there are a few others around that do salvage timber from old houses as well.
Keep in mind that not all the recycled timber is Jarrah, when it started to become more scarse the builders moved onto Karri which looks very similar. You need to be quite particular when foraging through the stacks.

Keep an eye on any West Austalian Newspaper timber auctions, Ross's have
have them frquently and its a good way to source your timber.
Forrest Commission recently had an auction run by Ross's down in Harvey lots pack lots of Jarrah,Marri,Karri,& Sheoak to choose from.
