Table saw blade sharpening in Sydney
Hi folks - I have done a search of the forum and can't find any previous posts on this one. Does anyone have any recommendations for a table saw blade sharpening service in Sydney (I'm in Parramatta). I have a Forrest Woodworker II which hasn't bee re-sharpened yet and obviously don't want to take chances and have it stuffed up.
Thanks in advanceShine on you crazy diamond!

Have you thought of Henry Bros at Vineyard, near Windsor?
Just do it!

At the Perth Woodworking show yesterday I seen a circular saw blade sharpening machine for around $400 at the Carbatec stand. Chatting to the boss bloke of the Perth shop he said that they have only recently recieved them. So you may want to buy and do your own. I am considering aquiring one as I can see the advantages.

Look up Saw Doctor in your prefered directory. They do this stuff and make up blades etc all the time. Won't hazard a guess as to the cost, but is will be cheaper than replacement and cheaper than buying a machine to do it yourself. Whoever does it will have between 5 and 45 yers experience and thats a bit better than starting on the learning curve as well.

Another recommendation for Chapmans at Seven Hills. They are located on Powers Road which runs off Old Windsor Road so pretty handy to Parramatta.
I used them when I lived in Sydney and was very pleased with there work, service and price. Very willing to answer questions and give a quote over the phone.Hitch

another vote for Henry Brothers at Riverstone BUT, from reading American woodworking magazines, I understood that Forrest blades could only be sharpened by Forrest?
Ring the boys at Henry's and ask, they'll tell you,

As I discovered the hard way, there are many people who will sharpen saw blades. What is REALLY important is to find someone that can sharpen your blade WITHOUT changing the geometry of the teeth on the blade.
While I can't help with specific sharpening shops in Sydney, my suggestion is to call a few cabinet shops in your local area. Just ask them where to have your blades sharpened. Most shops will be glad to give you the information.
I took a really superb blade to a small shop. The blade came back sharp but mediocre in cutting plywood.
Later in a discussion with a technician that worked for a company that made some $50,000US sharpening machines, the issue of tooth geometry was explained. It seems that some of the older machines don't have the ability to adjust to the modern geometry of many of todays blades.

Thanks rrich,
that has been my exact fear too, especially since I've heard rumours that the Forrests are a special breed in the sharpening world. I know of several saw sharpening services, Henry Bros included, but I was looking for someone with positive experience that I could go with. I have been happy with Henry Bros band saw blades, but have had no experience with their circular saws or sharpening. I guess it's a good plan to ask local trades - I have a plywood cutting service reasonably close by, will try them first.
cheers

Ring Henry Bros and ask them about sharpening Forrest blades. I have read 'horror stories' in US magazines about sharpening Forrest blades and each magazine has recommended sending them only to the manufacturer but then usually adding the caveat that they don't believe Forrest blades are that much better than others that it makes up for the inconvenience the sharpening.
