    Default A small side table/cabinet

I want to make a few small side tables and these caught my eye. Does anyone know anything about the design, history or what you might call them?

    Lol, droll.

What do you call these STYLE of units (not these particular ones).

Is there a period design these are drawn from?

I read a comment in one of the British woodworking magazines recently that basically said that there are a few forms of furniture which have not changed in essential form, only in the ornamentation and other details - think of farmhouse tables. I'm sure 6 drawer chest of drawers was one.

I'm sure I've seen them called Linen Chests too.

Here's a bit of input from a resident master: https://www.woodworkforums.com/f187/w...rawers-124803/

Thanks guys. I think I need to sit down with some books and leaf through them. It is easier to find this stuff if it has a particular name, "5 drawer chest" is pretty generic.

So far I've seen them called:

    Bedside cabinet
    Side Cabinet
    Drawers Chest
    Drawer Box
and a host of made up manufacturers names (Eddy West etc)

    Hi Groggy

    I think they're derivative.
Originally they were a 5 drawer chest which would have stood on a stand or, more likely, another chest
think in terms of silks and satins in these drawers and cottons, woollens and surge in the lower chest

if you want a fancy name, call 'em a "lady's chest" and make sure your drawer joinery is petite and neat
    regards from Alberta, Canada

I think I will continue the search for "Lady's chest" AFTER the kids go to bed!

    Why?

Maybe wait until SWMBO is also in bed too.

Groggy, I didn't know that you actually made other things - I thought you were the resident workbench guy. You knew something like this had to come didn't you?

    I've got no idea, Groggy.

While the design screams: "chest of drawers," the size doesn't, they're only about 500mm high. Looks like a good way to hide all the magazines and remotes from next to the couch.

I don't know what I'd call them, if I think of something, I'll repost.

    WoodWould might chip in here.

    Cheers,

    eddie
