    Default Table saw fences

Was toying with the idea of selling my Makita 2708 table saw and getting a Triton workstation system so I can rip larger pieces of timber. Also the fence on my current saw is a pain to use as it never runs paralell to the blade without getting my tape measure out.

Googled DIY table saw fence and found a few. But was wondering if anyone has some suggestions on ones they have made OR after market ones they have bought.

I don't want to spend a fortune on one. I paid $350 for the saw and can't see the point of spending $150-300 on a new fence.

Nextdoor neighbour is an ex fitter and turner and welding demon. I have access to milling machines and people who know how to use them. Something simple would be best! Something like DIY Table Saw Fence #1: Table Saw Fence - by Hutch @ LumberJocks.com ~ woodworking community

    Any help appreciated!

    You won't like my answer.

Incra offer a range of fences. The ultralite is fairly cheap. It's main issue is 12" throat. Otherwise even it is strong, stiff and of course delivers exceptional accuracy and repeatability quickly.

To get past the throat issue you could make a series of guage blocks out of stable timber or plastic or whatever to step out the fence. Alternatively if your going to the trouble to mount extruded aluminium rails you could mount the incra off those with some stops at appropriate intervals.

    Look at:

Product Manuals :: Precision Woodworking with Incra Fences, Jigs, Rules and Other Precise Woodworking Tools

and read the setup of one of the tablesaw fences to see what I mean. You get 12" increments on the positioner so place stops 12" apart and you have throat as big as your rails are long, always perfectly square, rigid and precise.

The other option that has been popular here is the wixey digital fence.

You might think this is overkill, but going from a conventional fence to one of these premium systems makes using the saw 100 times more fun.

    Hi Onezero,

Why don't you just make a new fence for it. There are heaps in this forum for you to base your ideas on.

I just completed making one for my Makita MLT100 and also added more surface and can now rip just over 1200mm.

Sing out if I can help in anyway mate.

Have been watching him make his fence today. LOTS of work there and a bit more than I need for my basic needs just at the moment.

Yours seem within reach for me. Where did you get your materials for me and about how much did it cost? I like how you extended the table surface too, very clever.

    Hi Onezero
Sounds like your going up my garden path. Dont forget to factor in buying a decent saw to go in triton.
I had a triton saw and router table for a while. Fences slow and need to measure to check parralel. Ended up selling selling them and bought an old cast iron table saw. You can pick them up very cheap. Vast improvement. Then I found fence wasnt reliable. I found heaps of info on making your own Biesemeyer style fence. Easy if you have access to a few basic metal working tools. I also put stick on measuring tape and magnifying viewer on my fence. Here are a few links that I found.

The first link is what I copied and it works a treat, square and accurate every time. Can cut without measuring with confidence.
I attached a couple of photos for your interest.

It may seem like a heap of work but believe me it's not and its so worth it at the end!

I brought all of my metal at EDCON STEEL. You can actually buy what you need at the length you need.... At a rough guess I'd be around the $80-$100 mark completed.

If you decide that you want to have a go at it and you'd like all the dimensions sing out and I'll send them to you.

    $100 is worth it.

I have emailed Metaland with the link to the aluminium one hoping they can help. Doesn't require me to weld which is good!

In regards to your extended table. Have you attached it to the extended rails? Any other support? How thick is the ply? Also have to screwed it into the existing table saw anywhere?

Am wanting to extend my table saw surface like you have.

Yeah I have attached aluminium angle to the inside of the Steel angle to hold the bench extension up.

I didn't use ply, just some old MDF 19mm left over from my sons old bed.

I'll see if I can post some pics of how it went together pre painted.
