    Default Thickie Spiral Head Issues

    Hi WWF,

I have a 20" spiral in my Carbatec thickie and find that on boards less then 40mm wide it leaves lines across the face of the board ever 10mm or so.

On wider boards the results are awesome.

The lines can be sanded out however it take some effort as I dont like using the ROS on such narrow strips

Anyone else had this problem or know how to resolve it?

Don't know what's causing it, but maybe try running narrow boards on an angle and see if it helps

Today I was running 3m+ lengths through. Not much of an angle can be achieved

the only thing i can think of would be a lack of roller pressure, or platen pressure if it has one, allowing the thin boards to be able to rock side to side, whereas a wide board won't be able to do that.

Can you feed a couple of boards together side by side?

Just a thought. Is the opposite face jointed? If the opposite face has twist or warp it may not be seating properly on the bed.

I can do that and that resolves the issue. Sometimes however it is not an option. Before I spend countless hours trying to fault find I wanted to know if this is to be expected or if others are having a similar issue

Not normally however this happens with all narrow boards, no exceptions

this occurs whether you put it into the left, middle or right side?

It may be caused by the pressure of the feed rollers, on the wider boards the pressure is spread more evenly so to doesn't show up.

That would be my guess too. Do the marks disappear if you take a deeper cut?

A pic of what I am talking about

image.jpg The sanding to get rid of it is not insignificant

Damienol, raise the cutterhead all the way or lower the table whichever it is on your machine and have a look at your infeed roller. This is where the marks come from. The infeed roller needs to grip the timber so that it can push it past the cutterhead.

THe marks you are getting are probably being made in the wider pieces too but are being taken off again with the passing of the cutterhead, as is supposed to happen.

That will be the problem. the solution is to find out how the relationship between the cutterhead and the infeed roller is not correct.

It may be that the springs on the infeed roller are too tight and can press harder on the thinner pieces, or it may be that the infeed roller and cutterhead are either too high or too low in relation to each other or it may be something else.

    Hope this helps

    Doug

Looks like roller marks. Take a deeper pass. The steel rollers have "teeth" which dig into the timber. Roller pressure may be light which is why it doesnt show on wide boards because the rollers couldnt dig in deeply
