(There was a comment recently about a forumite's brother buying and sometime later selling a place where the table was part of the deal because it was just too big to move.)
Yes, the "premium" adjective was describing the dimension, rather than the furniture, as I now understand it.

I was going to post earlier, but didn't, that a 3-4" thick table is somewhat an irresponsible gluttonous use of timber, IMO. I'm even considering taking my premium figured Blackbutt boards down from 44mm (dressed) to 18-20mm by resawing. Just for a start, it will be too bloody heavy even at 44mm!

Tell you what: I'll cut a couple of packs of 12/4 and drop them out to 10% and give you a call when they're ready. You fly into Cairns or Townsville, we pick you up bring you to the mill and you can have a look. Best case scenario you got timber that you cant get much anywhere else at the same price landed your end that it was going to cost you anyway, and I got a new customer and get to bypass the middleman so got a bit better then wholesale price.
Worst case scenario... you got a tax deductible weekend in FNQ (and there are worse things in life then that) and I got a couple packs of heavier stuff that will shift reasonably fast anyway.

The only reason I cant say come next week is we've been turning everything into 8/4 for doors lately and I've only got one lonely pack of (albeit good) 10/4 queensland maple and one of 12/4 Caledonian Oak in stock. I got a hell of a good brown walnut log in the yard though. But if you were up this way you're welcome to visit.

If you're interested PM me some contact details.

Is it just me that keeps reading John's posts in this thread and wishing they were a lot closer to where he mills this stuff so as to make it possible to buy some of this timber?

Be a helluva trip from the Hunter to FNQ - it's an attractive thought, but the travel time and cost of hiring kit to haul the timber (I can only carry about a half cube in my current trailer due to weight) would make it hardly worthwhile, I"m afraid This also presumes that John would be happy to deal with small lots and "retail" buyers - I have the idea this gentleman is into wholesale quantities and bulk purchasers, which is very understandable!

I have found it curious that millers in the North don't ship directly to us in the South. There must be very good reasons for this though.

As in any industry, competition removes inefficiency, so I'd imagine we are getting as good a deal as one can get.

...still, a few cube of tasty timbers at a vast discount would be lovely!

    You'd drive?
I'm thinking a group would arrange to fly to FNQ one weekend, select a few cubes from John's stash, and then get John to ship it south to somewhere like Newcastle where it could be collected with car and trailer.

I think it is less an issue of cost and more related to the mass of a top built from 3" thick boards. Much too difficult to handle on a regular basis.
I'm not thinking of tops for that sort of walnut thickness.

Some of my nicest tops I do are from 1 1/2 " which is 38mm and end up finished between 30 to 35mm depending on the base dimensions. I just did an Oak top finished at 48mm . Way to heavy to move around , and dint look much better than a 35mm to to Me for that base it was on .

For me I'm wanting 3" or over just for leg and base construction . If I need thicker I laminate, like an Oak trestle I'm about to start where the two columns are cut from 180 x 180 oak I think . Would have to go check the plan to be sure. At 180mm I don't care what I'm laminating out of, but 50mm Oak should be a lot more economical than 75mm . 75 is about $6500 a M3

I've given this idea quite some thought over the years. There are some logistical challenges to be overcome:
sorting out what belongs to which person when it is unpacked - you can bet that the best pack for the timber is not the most logical to unpack for the punters
where do we unpack it to distribute it - a suitable large space would be required
    what if it's raining?
ensuring that enough trailers/trucks are present, and that everyone is there at the same time.

I believe it's doable but would need careful planning and ant-like co-operation. Flying the group of purchasers up looks after one of the problems (I think) - determining who gets what board - I can see arguments/problems arising from that, but if the boards are already selected personally, and chalked up, then that is solved.

as you say FF some challengers, but potentially doable.

chalking boards and packs deals, in principle. with who gets what.
