What Timber is This?
Hi all, a big favour to ask.
What timber is this. I can't remember where I got it from, but pulled it out of my stock pile the other day and making a box from it. It is very tight grained, cuts easy, nice to router, and rather heavy also.
Thanks, Paul

Looks like Tas Oak or one of those similar eucalypt varieties to me. Hard to tell though without seeing the grain up close and in person where you can feel the weight and the see the tones more clearly

thanks EdTimber, I just googled Tasmanian Oak, there certainly is a big resemblance. I have two builders living closeby to me, and neither of them were sure. Thanks Ed

Looks like Tas Oak, like the stuff you get at Bunnies.
Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

Yeah, Tas Oak. Makes great box carcases too, I love it for that. It is really easy to get down to 1/4 inch thicknesses and not have to deal with blowouts, chipping, even bowing.

Thanks for those thoughts. I actually have the carcase pretty much finished. It is as solid as. So easy to work with also. Looking forward to see how it goes after a sand to 2000 grit then a couple of coats of Danish Oil then wax.
Thanks again,
Paul

Thanks EdTimber, I shall do that. It's still a little while off yet, but hopefully will be a bobby dazzler of a box, quite a bit more complicated that my usual boxes. I've got another 3 under construction also, hence its taking a little while longer.
