    Default Timber deck over concrete

Hello fellow woodies, I would like to lay a timber deck (merbau) over a concrete slab. I am limited by the fact that I cannot go above the weep holes in the wall. My solution is to lay the timber (19mm) on top of galv/zinc ceiling bearers (@ 500mm apart). To prevent the bearers from flattening out from the weight I thought to secure the sides of the bearers to the concrete (dynabolts); this would I hope stop the bearer from spreading out.

I would welcome any thoughts on this. I'm not too sure if this has been done before or even if it is suitable (maybe I have missed some negative possibilities).

    Thanks in advance

Hey mate....first of all, by Ceiling bearers, do you mean ceiling batons?? which are used for taking gyprock sheets??? I may have misunderstood BUT If so i would NOT recommend using these for your floor joists (batons)....it will fail!

Lets say you only have a total height no more than 50mm finished height (top of decking) then i would recommend using a H3 treated pine, ripped down to roughly 30mm or whatever the height is to allow finish height below weep holes and below door sills etc , treat the cut edge.

Water sitting under the ripped H3 (joists/batons), over time will become an issue unless you put a damp coarse under it, or rip some kerfs to allow drainage before you fix to concrete. Use gal dynas or similar to fix joists. Also you want your spacing to be 450mm centers, NOT 500mm as this is Aus standard..

Not only will using timber make your adjustments for level etc easier, when it comes to fixing deck down, you will have a much more pleasant time, Hammering 2'' dome head decking nails or screwing down a nice architectural stainless screw.

    Hope this helps
