    Default Timber Deck Finishing

    Hi All,

I have just completed a new deck using 90mm Merbau and was told not to apply decking oil for about 6 months to allow the timber to weather. I have applied oil to other decks and have never experienced problems with the oil not taking. Can anyone confirm or deny whether you get a better result from letting it sit for 6 months or whether it makes no difference. The person who advised me works selling timber finishing products and gave this as general advice but always like to source alternative opinions,

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Glen,
    It is generally good advice.
Some people prefer to wash the deck with something like napisan (or you can buy specialist products for more $$$).
If the deck gets a really good washing (with rain) you can actually see the tannins wash out. (Note they will stain concrete, etc underneath).
6 months is probably longer than necessary, but I would just give it a good scrub with napisan and oil it straight away (after its dry).

I'd wait. I've had trouble with mould appearing under the oil because I didn't dry it sufficiently.

There is heaps and heaps of info on this on the sister site to these forums. Check out www.renovateforum.com

I would (did) let it weather until the timber stops leaching the tannins, it was a while ago now but I don't think it took 6 months, a good three at least.

It's probably not super critical to wait as you will need to oil the deck every 6 months anyway so if you find it looks a bit funny from mould or discolouration just let it weather longer before putting your second coat on.

Thanks for the information, this confirms what I was told, I'm going to give the napisan a go, let it really dry then give it a good oil, thanks again
