Timber expansion in Frame and Panel construction
I have completed a bathroom vanity with frame and panel doors.
The environment it is in is pretty humid (both because it is a bathroom and because it is in the far south-west of WA). The expansion across the grain has been a lot more than I expected, resulting in the doors no longer closing.
What is my remedial action? Plane the doors down so they fit? Or will I need to reseal it as well?
With the expansion experienced (>2mm per door, with each door approx 300mm wide) will the glue joints fail?
I finshed it in Tung oil - which I thought would be sufficient - should I have used a varnish? If so, can I seal over Tung oil?

Expansion in timber
Knight,
It's always a problem, but a technique I use that seems to minimise this is that when I build somthing I seal all surfaces, including all of the inside surfaces. I tend to do this with a polyurethane, currently using British Paints at $58 for 4 litres. I then put my finish of choice on the outside or visible areas.
I believe the expansion problem is exacerbated, when you have one surface that is sealed and one that is not, for the timber will draw in moisture from the unsealed surface.
Of course the thing is you have to do this as you progress step by step, which does not help your current problem.
I think it is out with the handplane.

I only use oil finishes and as a result I will not make bathroom furniture for others. However if I was going to I would probably spray it inside and out with Nitro .
