Default Timber offer + challenge 2

Hi everybody. A few months ago Robutacion organised a friendly competition that many enjoyed (especially me; I won it!) so, now that the idea has been tested, I would be happy to keep it going.

Simple truths highlighted by the first experience were:
    - green timber is a bastard;
    - postage is a drag;
    - judging can be difficult to organise.

With this in mind, I propose this challenge:
Produce a small object of beauty using 240 cc of dry, defect free olive timber (provided free by me). Winners proclaimed by acclamation, i.e by poll as suggested by , IIRC.

This is how it would work:

    1) Open to Australian residents. Any technique is acceptable.
    2) You post here your willingness to participate.
    3) I PM you my address.
    4) you send me ASAP by 14 March a self addressed prepaid Australia Post 500g satchel ($5.30) and indicate how you want the 240 cc of timber, e.g 2x8x15, 5x5x9.6 etc. Rough sawn, not planned and thicknessed. Grain along the longest side unless you say differently. If you plan a turned object please tell me, it could help if straight corners are not essential. Assume the timber to be featureless, like ivory. If you can bring out the subtlety of the fine grain, so much the better.
    5) If there is any problem with my ability to provide exactly what you want we sort it out publicly on this thread.
    6) Depending on number of participants and number of prize sponsors a number of winners is decided (min 3 max 5)
    7) On or before 28 March I send out the timber in the satchels provided by you.
    8) On 28 April an Administrator opens a thread for the presentation of the works, to be closed on 1 May. Max 5 photos as usual.
    9) On 1 May the Administrator opens a poll for forum members to vote on the works.
    10) On 7 May the Administrator closes the poll, tallies the votes and declares the winners.

    Over to you!

Sounds interesting. Are you allow to add other materials... other timbers, inlays, metal, leather... anything?

I'm in for a turned item.

    Can I have a disk about 190mm across x 40mm deep?
(I think that works out to 240c³)

    g'day cliff
If im reading F&E's proposal correctly

using 240 cc of dry, defect free olive timber
Its been a while since my maths days but i cant figure out how you got 240cc from a disc with a dia of 19cm and a thickness of 4cm

a blank 19x19x4 cm would be 1444 cc

I could be wrong but isnt the formular for the volume of a cylinder

V= pi x radius squared x height which would equal

    3.14 x (9.5 X 9.5) x 4 = 1134.11 cubic centimeters.

I think 240cc is more like 4 pen blanks than a bowl size blank.

FE...this sounds like a very good challenge....Its got me stumped already (which isnt hard ) I just cant think of what to make with that size timber .

...except as I already suggested 4 pens . Which may attract votes from the pen turning crowd....but some how I sense the rest of the forumites might not be so generous

    cheers
    BD

    Nope, 2 pi R (or piD) by height is 2 x 3.14 x 9.5 x 4 = 238.64

isnt pi x Dia the formular for circumfrence ?

volume is the area of the circle x the height

    cheers

Sorry Cliff but 2 x pi x r will give you the circumfrence.
pi x r squared will give you the area.

Edit : beat me to it BD
