A tint compatible with lacquer ?
Hi Again,
Maybe I should post this in musical instruments, but it is a general question too.
I am repairing a guitar for a friend . The headstock of this Les Paul style guitar has broken off , a common problem if you let them fall over backwards !
I have glued it back on in the usual way for this break, but this guitar is finished with a red mahogany tinted clear lacquer.
I need a tint product that is compatible with auto lacquer thinners, so I can drip feed the tint in to some clear in a glass jar until I get a close match with the neck, apply to the crack and blend with the neck using eg., an airbrush, micromesh sanding and polishing.
Here's some photos and this is a link to a USA product available there . I will only need a very small amount, if possible.

Thank you .

Feast Watson Proof Tint is solvent based but I'm not sure whether it would be Auto Lacquer compatiable. Maybe a call to Feast Watson to find out?

I will probably never make or repair a guitar, but I do love the products and videos made by StewMac in the USA.
I was only just looking at tints for boxes when you asked the question: Colors + Tints + Stains | stewmac.com
There is a corresponding video by a classic dude named Dan Erlewine (sp?). A master at repairs.
Also, a few months ago I found a guitar repair place in Sydney that carried the same things, plus an epic range of sprayable lacquers, but the name eludes me right now.... Ill google to see if I can find them again.

Fantastic woodpixel. Thank you. That should be it.
Yes, Stew Mac profits are up since I discovered them a few years back. Most of their stuff is good, although a bit pricey by the time it gets here + exchange rate.
Dan Earlwhine is a national treasure for the USA and a really nice bloke. I have his comprehensive book on Guitar Repairs and set ups. I always refer to it before touching tools.
Thanks again, that is a great help.
Regards,
Don

Thanks Lappa.
I have that Feast Watson product in a few tints but the supplier couldn't guarantee it would like lacquer thinners. It is solvent based, but more on the turps side I think. The product Woodpixel found is advertised as compatible with lacquer thinners, so for the $15.00 delivered for 50ml, its what I'll go with.
I have been using a few drops of Feast Watson maple with Tru Oil recently to help with a colour match between a neck and body of a guitar , and it definitely is compatible with the Tru Oil. You don't need much to do the trick.
BTW, I love Tru Oil, thanks to an introduction to it from rustynail, a Valued Member of this great Forum.

Glad you can get the right stain
Just reading the info on Feast Watson colour reducer, which is used with Proof Tint, it says it's miscible with water and I remember a guy at Bunnies stating you could use metho at a pinch instead of colour reducer.
So probably not a good idea to mix with lacquer thinners.
