Default tomato stake / tree stake machine

    hi all,

Some time ago i posted a thread looking for some ideas for a machine to be made for me or to use and existing machine which would put points like a v shape on timber to make stakes for tomatoes, trees and timber edging pegs the dimensions are as follows:

    1" x 1" 900 long to 3000 long
    1.5" x 1.5" 900 long to 3000 long
    1" x 2" 300 long to 1200 long.

i am urgently looking for a machine to be made or a machine to be adapted to suit where i can place the blank stick in there and have it dock to length and point at one end. It needs to be able to produce a fair volume in a day as i wholesale these around melbourne. I know they are available in the USA but i cant justify the extra expense in exchange rates and import costs and am worried that if the machine needs repair etc then the downtime not to mention cost as it is in another country so am looking locally preferable in melbourne. there is a machine in the usa made by keystone machinery see website : http://www.keystonemachine.org/Chise...elPointer.html
I was looking for something similar to this that would run 2 saw blades to point or any other suggestions .

am ready to have the machine asap urgent so any help would be awsome.

    regards

JC walsh wood working machinery 32 victory rad airport west in melbourne have a neale single end tenoner for under three grand that it shouldn't be hard to modify to suit your needs. I haven't seen a neale tenoner in the flesh but I know that I can do what you want on my wadkin but they seem to cost a fair bit more

All you need is a spindle moulder fitted with one of these. Crown tooling in Sydney can help. you'll need a new cutter head and blades to suit.

You can pick up old an spindle moudler drit cheap (3 phase) a a couple of hundred bucks and the new cutter head and blades will cost you about $1000.
You can the use the sliding table on your moudler and take two passes adnd your done.

Alternatively sharpen your tomahawk and get chopping i recon you can do 1000/ day if your keen.
Chop chop chop chop. 1. chop chop chop chop... 2

    good luck.

Though about importing already pointed stakes... in large voulmes it would be cheaper then buying the utiltiy grade hardwood here in OZ....

PS what are you paying for your raw material... maybe we can help?

Try contacting Combined Manufacturing Company, Factory 2 1 Kitchen Road, Dandenong South, VIC 3175. They produce/supply the rollpak (garden edging) and tomatoe stakes to Bunnings (I picked up a head of scrap after the 40 deg heat wave).

They are just down the road from my work, but I can't seem to find a contact number on google or white pages.

Good practical advice, Steve, but why do you suggest two passes. A spindle grinder with enough grunt should be able to cut both faces of the taper in a single pass.

Also he will need a gang saw to cut the taper-ended boards into stakes.

    Cheers

I think you may find that Steve is saying, is do one pass to do 2 faces then flip the stake 90° to do the other 2 faces which is 2 passes
    Cheers

there was a sheltered workshop in coffs harbour that made various size pegs for state forests and private contractors (forewood industries I think) may be worth the search.

what if the hokey pokey is really what it's all about?

yep two passes, 90 degrees, pointy on 4 sides.... but you'll find that two sides may do... there i just doubled your productivity.
