do un to others - sometimes it pays off.
I helped a bloke to clean out his workshop on the gold coast. it wa costing him $700/ month for a 3m x 6m shed and he wasnt getting any comisions.
so i took all his wood and soold what i could to help him pay the owed rent. mainly camphor slabs and pine ofcuts. https://www.woodworkforums.com/showthread.php?t=89415
anyhow i was donw the coast this weekend and he rang me. he had all his tools packed up and going to put them in storage and thaught he would see if i wanted to use them.
and well what did you think i said.
i ended up loading
hafco 10" table saw
bosh 12" SCMS
festo shop vac
bench sander
2hp air compressor
makita router
hitachi router
gmc router
makita belt sander
various orbital sanders
5 electric drills
2 air nail guns
1 air staple gun
spray guns and blowers
15 or so bar and pipe clamps
a large asortment of hand tools
a ton of screws and nails
plenty of half sheets of mdf and chipboard
enough to fill the back of a twin cab ute to the top of the canopy and the back seat. and a bit of wood on teh roof.
all i have to now is clean out teh shop to fit all this stuff.

Good that something positive has come out of your assistance Carl but I would be wary and want some details in writing. What happens when he wants them back, is normal wear a tare OK, what if something packs up the second time you use it, what if the whole lot gets stolen from your place? Got a signed list of what he gave you with condition of each item. What happens when he comes to wanting it all back in two years time and he comes over and says, those clamps on the wall over there were also mine and so was that chainsaw?

i will be makign a list up tomorow and gettign him to sighn it. i trust him but im sure he will understand.
as with anything i borow it will go back in the same if not better condition than what i got it. if it breaks wile im using it i will have it fixed or replace it. its just common decentcy. pity others didnt practice teh same every time i lend sompthing it comes back broken.

I'm sure he will love that slap in the face. He offers you all this gear in good faith and you ask him to sign a bit of paper in case he tries to rip you off. Sometimes you just have to take people at face value or say no thanks. This litigeous society we are creating is b***s**T.
Try to look unimportant, they may be low on ammo.

I think the list is a great idea, but failing that, how about a couple of good, clear photos of everything. One set for him and one for you.
It's not that you don't trust him or him you, but rather a sign of respect for your friendship, that your friendship is important to you, so if things happen in the future, you have the photos so you won't have to argue about it all basing everything on memory.
cheers

a photo is a good thing, after a period of time it is hard to remember what is yours and what is theirs. Is as much for his benefit as yours, probably good idea for insurance too, incase someone wanders in one day and decides to help themselves

i would say make a list and take photo's so "when he wants them back, you can tell him what is his - so he gets everything back".
basically what i am saying is cover your own by having the list but when you approach him make sure you dont insult him - make it sound like you would be the one at fault ("forgetting" who owned what). that way you both walk away happy.
or you could just trust himS T I R L O

I think Stirlo's got it. Give him a copy of the list and the photo's and tell him it's so YOU won't forget what's his, when he wants them back. Also ask him to check the list and see if you've missed anything.
Cheers.
Vernon.

Yeah I agree with Stirlo as well with his comment. At least then you have a record of wht he has given you and if something happens then you also have proof of what you had in your shed.
Dave,
hug the tree before you start the chainsaw.

How long for? I have sometimes borrowed from a few different people who have gone overseas (for years) and my own tools have come and gone with some being replaced. Some of theirs being replaced too. Not trying to make judgment on your memory Carl but the line can get blurred over time.
Personally I'd be making a list and taking some photos, even if it's just to say look here is what I will be giving you back and then everyone knows where they stand. It's not all negative.
And yeah I agree good always comes from helping out others, especially when they need it most.Cheers,
Shannon.

There has been generosity on the part of both involved in this exercise, and also trust. I can't foresee any problems but Stirlo's suggestion is sound, as is the photo idea.I have lent and borrowed stuphph over the years and then wondered who owned what. I've even taken gear back to people who have sworn it wasn't theirs but after some head scratching realized it was.
