    Question Unique Shaper Cutters Anyone???

    Greetings everyone,

I'm in search of unique shaper bits for raised panels, cabinet doors, and entry way doors. The common ones are, in my opinion, outdated for the area that I live in. I'm remodelling the house and need to come up with something unique, that fits the area.

Simple designs, square or angular edges. Straight lines.... No curvy stuff, but maintain a certain complexity.

    Thanx!

    Matt

There are some tooling companies that make cutters with removeable/replaceable blades. The idea being that you have the blades ground to your specs. I imagine it wouldn't be cheap though. Even simpler, for a clean, contemporary look i.e no curvy moulded stuff, is to forget the raised panel idea completely and just use flat panels instead, shaker style. Easier, cheaper, faster and fits with any style.

I came up with an idea for kitchen cabinet doors some time ago maybe you could work round this design. Many more designs available. These were for glass doors but the shapes could be included for panel doors

    tcowdroy,

Thanx for the help. I've found the custom ground ones, and yes, they are expensive indeed. I've been playing around with a few ideas, just using a combination of other cutter heads, but this is time consuming, having to run your piece through more than one time, two tops.

I'll keep this forum posted should I find any resource that is not going to break the bank.

    Hi Matt,

Any local sawdoctor could grind you a set of custom shaper cutters and/or limiters.

I take it that the design is for the cross section of the door panel field. The choice of design is endless. I'd try something like a reverse ogee with the land at the bottom - The classic american 'lazy S'.

    Cheers,

    Hi Matt,

this may be obvious, and you may have already looked, but the Carba-Tec catalogue has a plethora of bits for raised panel bits; for instance there is a "chamfer Raised Door Panel Cutter" which doesn't have the curvy stuff, straight square edges kind of thing...

Also as mentioned before, my local sawdoctor regularly cuts me 'unique' knives for my planer/moulder, possibly get some of the ones for custom grinding, but get your local guy to grind them, I'd say that would be much cheaper than the manufacturer doing them.

    Hope it helps

If all you want is straight lines, then why not make them on your saw bench instead?
