    Default Using a mortiser

    Hi

I found a mortiser and the auger bit for it in the toolsboxes dad handed over but he has no memory of it so chances are it was my grandfathers. Do I need a special drill to fit this to? I've trieed the ever faithful google but it looks like these always go in machines in some magical and unclear manner. Or does the chisel part get tapped into the wood then the drill bit only goes in the drill...I'm lost!

Worst case, I fit a handle on it and use it for squaring up mortises by hand!

    Cheers
    Andrew

They do take a special bit. These are available separately, because they wear out or bend (DAMHIKT). You should be able to get replacements from Carbatec. The chisel & bit don't go in an ordinary drill press, but you can buy morticing attachments that fit drill presses.
When you use them, the drill should be slightly ahead of the chisel. The chisel then pushes the corners into the hole made by the chisel.
